Historical Description
FRESSINGFIELD is a large and pleasant village and parish, standing on high ground, 4 ½ miles south from Harleston station, on the Waveney Valley section of the Great Eastern railway and 9 north-east from Eye, in the North Eastern division of the county, Hoxne hundred, petty sessional division and union, Harleston county court district, rural deanery of Hoxne, archdeaconry of Suffolk and diocese of Norwich. The church of SS. Peter and Paul is a fine building of flint and stone, chiefly in the Decorated style with Perpendicular additions, consisting of chancel, clerestoried nave, aisles, north and south porches and an embattled western tower containing a clock and 8 bells: the south porch is richly groined and has a parvise over, and at the eastern gable of the nave is a turret for a sanctus bell: there are piscinae in the chancel and south aisle, and remains of the stairs leading to the rood loft: the nave has a good open timbered roof, beautifully carved; and also contains some remarkably fine carved benches: in the chancel are brasses to William Brewes, son of Sir Thomas Brewes, and Ann, his wife, dated 1489, and tablets to the Rev. Edward Vaughan B.D. 21 years vicar of this parish, d. 17 March, 1797, and to Eleanor his wife, to the Rev. Sir Henry Pix Heyman bart. last male descendant of the ancient family of Heyman, of Somerfield, Kent, and 11 years vicar here, d. 13 Nov. 1808; and to the Rev. Thomas Allsopp B.D. 37 years vicar, d. 31 Oct. 1845, and Anne his wife: in the churchyard is a tomb, with inscription, to William Sancroft, the non-juring Archbishop of Canterbury, who died in 1693: the church has been restored at a cost of about £2,000, and affords 370 sittings. The register dates from the year 1554. The living is a vicarage, with the rectory of Withersdale annexed, joint net yearly value £442, with 67 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Master and fellows of Emmanuel College, Cambridge, and held since 1885 by the Rev. John James Raven D.D. of that college, F.S.A, hon. canon of Norwich and rural dean of Hoxne. The Baptist chapel here was built in 1835, and has 700 sittings: the Primitive Methodist chapel was erected in 1873. Whittingham Hall, an old mansion, built in 1653, is now used as a farm house. The Fox and Goose Hotel, originally built in 1616, is a good old family and commercial house, and has an excellent bowling green attached. The income of the Guildhall estate, arising from the Fox and Goose hotel, an ancient building and formerly the Guildhall, together with 8 acres of land, is applied as follows: the Tent of the hotel to the repairs of the church; the rent of the land to the relief of the deserving poor of the parish: there is also a fee farm rent, left by Archbishop Sancroft, now (1900) amounting to a net sum of £42 yearly, of which £10 a year is payable to the schoolmaster for teaching five poor boys free and £6 with a house to the parish clerk; the remainder being assigned to the vicar: the Rev. John Shepherd, formerly vicar, left the interest of £20 to be given in bibles annually. The lords of the manor and principal landowners are Lord Henniker, for Ufford Hall; Sir Hugh Edward Adair bart. of Flixton Hall, for Chepenhall; the trustees of Henry Newton Heale esq. for Whittingham Hall, and Thomas Walker Dring esq. for Veals Hall; John Sancroft Holmes esq. of Gawdy Hall, Norfolk, and Thomas Pratt esq. of Harleston, are also landowners. The land is fertile and for the most part a stiff clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley, beans, turnips and pasture. The area is 4,609 acres of land and 9 of water; assessable value, £3,403; the population in 1891 was 1,086.
Chepenhall Green, 2 miles south-east, and Ufford Green, 2 ¼ south-west, are hamlets; Hussey Green is one mile south-east; Caterpole Green is three-quarters of a mile south.
National School (mixed), built in 1847 & considerably enlarged in 1873, at a cost of £200, and again in 1891, for 250 children; average attendance, 190.
