Historical Description
FRESTON is a pleasant village and parish, on the south bank of the river Orwell, 3 ½ miles south from Ipswich, and 3 north-east from Bentley junction station on the Colchester and Ipswich section of the Great Eastern railway, in the South Eastern division of the county, Samford hundred, petty sessional division and union, Ipswich county court district, rural deanery of Samford, archdeaconry of Suffolk and diocese of Norwich. The church of St. Peter is an edifice in the Early English and Decorated styles, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and an embattled western tower containing one bell: in the chancel are stained windows and monuments to the Bond family: the church was restored in 1875 and a vestry added by the Rev. Alfred Bond B.A. rector here 1853—80: there are 140 sittings: a carved lych gate was erected in 1897 by public subscription in commemoration of Her Majesty’s long reign. The register dates from the year 1538. The living is a rectory, net yearly value about £240, including 12 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of Mrs. Durrant, and held since 1880 by the Rev. Christopher Rawes Durrant B.A. of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge. The old rectory, now called Freston House, is a well-built mansion, surrounded by ornamental timber and shrubberies. Freston Lodge, erected in 1841 upon a bold eminence, commanding extensive views of the Orwell and the surrounding country, is the seat of Miss Venn. Freston tower, which rises picturesquely above the trees on the south bank of the river, is a structure of brick, about 12 feet square and six stories in height, each forming a single room; a winding staircase connects the different floors and leads to the summit, which affords a fine view: the tower is supposed to have been built by the Latimers. Charles Hugh Berners esq. is lord of the manor. The principal landowners are Charles Hugh Berners esq. of Woolverstone Hall, Mrs. Mary Rodwell, of Woodlands, Holbrook; Charles Edmund Dashwood esq. and Miss Venn. The soil is light loam; subsoil, sand and crag. The chief crops are wheat, barley and roots. The area is 1,457 acres of land, 3 of water, 16 of tidal water and 78 of foreshore; rateable value, £1,669; the population in 1891 was 265.
