Historical Description

GAZELEY, called in Domesday “Desilingham,” is a village and parish in the North Western division of the county, Risbridge hundred, Newmarket petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Thurlow, archdeaconry of Sudbury and diocese of Ely. The village occupies a slightly elevated position 5 miles east-by-south from Newmarket, 9 west from Bury St. Edmunds and 2 south-west from Higham station on the Bury and Newmarket branch railway. The church of All Saints is an ancient building of stone, rubble and clunch, in the Decorated and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, clerestoried nave, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower containing 5 bells: the chancel retains sedilia and a piscina, and there is also a credence shelf and aumbry: the church was partially repaired in 1857; in 1884 the tower was rebuilt and the roof of the nave restored in 1888 at the expense of the late Rev. William Cooke, hon. canon of Chester and vicar of Gazeley (1856—66): the windows of the aisles were restored and the church reseated in 1891, and it now affords 300 sittings. The register dates from the 35th year of Henry VIII. (1543—4), but the entries previous to 1578 were copied by Thomas Nuce, then vicar, from the old register books. The living is a vicarage, consolidated with the rectory of Kentford, joint net yearly value £190, with residence and 4 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Master and fellows of Trinity Hall, Cambridge, and held since 1897 by the Rev. George Hew Butler MA. of Trinity Hall, Cambridge; the Sun Fire and Life Insurance Co. are lay rectors. The charities consist of a rent-charge of 7s. 6d. yearly, given by George Warren in 1683, and of 10s. by Simon Pratt in 1641 for Herring money, payable from land. The poor’s land of 37 acres produces a yearly sum which is distributed annually in coals. This place, originally the property of the Earls of Gloucester, descended to Ralph, Earl of Stafford, by marriage with Margaret, one of the sisters and co-heirs of Gilbert de Clare, Earl of Gloucester, and thereafter descended lineally to Edward (Stafford) Duke of Buckingham K.G. but was forfeited to the Crown by his attainder in 1522; it was afterwards settled upon Charles, Duke of Suffolk, by whom it was sold, and has since passed through various hands. Desning (anciently “Deselynge”) Hall is now the property of Captain William Robert Gamul Farmer, of Nonsuch Park, Cheam, Surrey; and Desnidge Lodge, of J. G. Barclay esq. Captain W. R. G. Farmer is lord of the manor of Desning; Sir Robert Affleck bart. of Dalham Hall, is lord of the manor of Bovills, and owns nearly all the land in the parish. Captain W. R. G. Farmer and C. E. and H. L. Hammond esqrs. of Newmarket, are the other landowners. The soil is various, being in some parts a stiff clay, in others chalky, and in others a light blowing sand; the subsoil is principally chalk. The crops are wheat, barley, beans, peas and roots. The area is 5,915 acres; rateable value, £3,230; and the population in 1891 was 883.

National School (mixed), erected in 1843, for 115 children; average attendance, 91.
