Historical Description

GISLINGHAM is a pleasant village and parish miles north from Finningham and 2 ½ south-west from Mellis stations of the Ipswich and Norwich section of the Great Eastern railway, 5 south-west from Eye, in the North Eastern division of the county, Hartismere hundred, petty sessional division and union, Eye county court district, rural deanery of North Hartismere, archdeaconry of Suffolk and diocese of Norwich. The church of St. Mary, erected in the 15th century, is a structure of flint, in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, north porch and an embattled western tower of brick, erected in the reign of Charles I. and containing 6 bells: the font is ancient and embellished with carved figures: there are 376 sittings. The register dates from the year 1558. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £430, including 54 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Montagu Turner esq. and held since 1891 by the Rev. Arthur Horatio Bellman B.A. of Caius College, Cambridge. Here is a Free Methodist chapel, built in 1860. The charities, arising from land left by Messrs. Darley and Symonds, in the year 1600, amount to £50 yearly, which sum is applied to the repairs of the church, the relief of the poor and the education of poor children. The Thornham Memorial Home for boys is managed by a committee in connection with the Church of England Society and is at present available for 8 children. Lord Henniker, who is lord of the manor of Goldingham, and George Holt Wilson esq. of Redgrave Hall, lord of the manor of Rushes-with-Jennies, the trustees of John Watling Ion esq. and Miss Bloomfield are the principal landowners. The soil is mixed, with some heavy; subsoil, principally clay, with some brick earth in parts. The land is cultivated on the four-course shift. The area is 2,210 acres; rateable value, £2,818; the population in 1891 was 494.
