Historical Description

GREAT ASHFIELD is a parish and scattered village 2 miles north from Elmswell station, on the Bury and Ipswich line of the Great Eastern railway, 6 south-east from Ixworth, and 10 east from Bury St. Edmunds, in the North Western division of the county, Blackbourn hundred and petty sessional division, Stow union, Bury St. Edmunds county court district, rural deanery of Thedwastre, archdeaconry of Sudbury and diocese of Ely. The church of All Saints is a building of flint, in the Early English, Decorated and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, nave, north aisle, vestry, south porch and a western tower with small spire containing 5 bells, rehung in 1887 at a cost of about £90: it contains an oak pulpit, dated 1619, and some ancient carved oak benches: the chancel was thoroughly restored in 1870, and the other portions have since been restored and the church partially reseated, and it now affords 200 sittings, of which 150 are free. The registers date from the year 1698, but are very imperfect. The living is a vicarage, gross yearly value £54, with residence, in the gift of Lord Thurlow, and held since 1893 by the Rev. William Charles Humbley MA. of Corpus Christi college, Cambridge, who was nominated by the Bishop of Ely through lapse. There is also an endowed lectureship, value about £40 yearly, and held by the vicar. Here is a Wesleyan chapel, built in 1881. Here was born, in or about 1732, the distinguished lawyer Edward, 1st baron Thurlow of Ashfield, lord chancellor 1778—92; and his brother, Thomas Thurlow, successively Bishop of Lincoln and Durham, both sons of the Rev. Thomas Thurlow, sometime vicar here. Lord Thurlow, who on his retirement received a new patent of peerage as baron Thurlow of Thurlow, died unmarried 12 Sept. 1806, when the original barony expired, while the second peerage passed to his nephew, Edward Hovell Thurlow esq. as 2nd baron. There are about 3 acres of land and a tenement, the rents of which are devoted to the church: in 1638 William Clark left £1 yearly for apprenticing poor children of the parish. Castle Hill is a farm house with a moat. Ashfield Lodge, the seat of Sidney Field esq. J.P. is a brick mansion. Ashfield House, a mansion of brick, is the seat of Arthur Hollond esq. Lord Thurlow is lord of the manor and principal landowner. The soil is good, inclining to be stiff; subsoil, clay and brick earth. The crops are on the four-course system. The area is 1,519 acres; rateable value, £1,186; the population in 1891 was 362.

School, erected in 1875 by Lord Thurlow, aided by subscriptions, for 72 children; average attendance, 63.
