Historical Description

GREAT BARTON is a parish 2 miles west from Thurston station on the Bury and Ipswich section of the Great Eastern railway, 3 north-east from Bury St. Edmunds and the Linnet Navigation, in the North-Western division of the county, Thingoe and Thedwestry petty sessional division, Thedwastre hundred, Thingoe union, county court district of Bury St. Edmunds, rural deanery of Thingoe, archdeaconry of Sudbury and diocese of Ely. The church of the Holy Innocents is an edifice of flint and stone in the Early English and Perpendicular styles, and consists of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles, containing 5 bells: there are 400 sittings. The register dates from the year 1558. The living is a discharged vicarage, net yearly value £250, including 350 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Sir Henry Charles John Bunbury bart. and held since 1897 by the Rev. James Arthur Hervey B.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge. William Howerdly, vicar of Great Barton, left by will in 1492 moneys to be laid out for the repairs of the parish church, and the residue for the relief of the poor of Great Barton; this property now consists of a farm, let for £45 yearly, which rent is applied as directed. Almshouses for four poor women were erected by Lieut.-Gen. Sir Henry E. Bunbury K.C.B., M.P. 7th bart. in memory of his first wife Louisa Emilia (d. 1828), daughter of Gen. the Hon. Henry Edward Fox. At the inclosure of the parish, in 1804, a farm was allotted to the poor of Great Barton in lieu of their right to cut fuel; the rent is applied to the purchase of coal, which is given to the poor. Barton Hall, the seat of Sir Henry Charles John Bunbury bart. D.L., J.P. was built probably about the end of Queen Elizabeth’s reign, or at the beginning of the reign of James the First, by Robert Audley, who died in 1624: the long narrow building of brickwork facing the south-east, though modernized, is part of the original building. The last of the Audleys sold his property in Barton to Thomas Folkes, whose only child became the second wife of Sir Thomas Hanmer, Speaker of the House of Commons in the reign of George I.: Sir Thomas Hanmer left Barton to his nephew, Sir William Bunbury, who came to reside here in 1748, and modernized the old house, and his son, Sir T. Charles Bunbury, added the handsome library built after a design by Sir William Chambers, between 1766 and 1770. Lieut.-Gen. Sir Edward Henry Bunbury, K.C.B. 7th bart. made considerable additions to the house in 1821, and also formed extensive pleasure grounds: the house contains a fine gallery of pictures by Sir Joshua Reynolds, Sir Peter Lely and many Italian and Dutch masters, and a very valuable collection of books: in the grounds are some fine trees and shrubs and the gardens are of some celebrity. Barton Lodge is the residence of James Maulkin King esq. J.P. Sir H. C. J. Bunbury bart. is lord of the manor and owner of rather more than half of the land in the parish. The soil is rich loam; subsoil, clay and gravel. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats, beans and turnips. The area is 3,574 acres of land and 18 of water; rateable value, £3,313; the population in 1891 was 766.

Barton Shrub and East Barton lie to the south-east: Cattishall Green lies to the south and Shinham Bridge to the east.

School (girls), built in 1840 by Lieut.-Gen. Sir Henry E. Bunbury K.C.B., M.P. 7th bart. for 80 girls; average attendance, 46.

School (boys), built in 1857 by Emily Louisa Augusta, 2nd wife of Sir H. E. Bunbury bart. for 80 boys; average attendance, 40.
