Historical Description

GREAT CORNARD is a parish and scattered village, pleasantly seated) on a gentle eminence near the river Stour, 1 mile south-east from Sudbury railway station, in the Southern division of the county, Babergh hundred, Melford petty sessional division, Sudbury union and county court district, and in the rural deanery and archdeaconry of Sudbury and diocese of Ely. The church of St. Andrew is a plain structure of flint, in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and a tower with wooden spire containing 5 bells: it was restored in 1862, and in 1887 a south aisle was added, at a cost of £400, defrayed by moneys left for that purpose by the late William King esq.: the organ was erected in 1887: the church affords 315 sittings. A new churchyard was given in 1892 by the Sparrow family, for Church of England services only. The register dates from the year 1500. The living is a discharged vicarage, net yearly value £99, with residence, in the gift of the Rev. Basil Jas. Harold Sparrow-Beridge MA. and held since 1894 by the Rev. Wm. Francis Singleton, of Trinity College, Dublin. There is a Congregational mission chapel here, erected in 1875, in connection with the chapel at Sudbury. The charities include 50s. a year from town lands, and the interest of £100 left by the late J. G. Sparrow esq. for poor parishioners. Here are the roller flour mills of Messrs. Baker. The Rev. B. J. H. Sparrow-Beridge MA. of Gosfield Place, Halstead, Essex, is lord of the manor, and G. Coote, Thomas Fitch and Charles Wm. Prigg esq. and the trustees of Mrs. Johnson are the principal landowners. The soil is light and particularly suited for the growth of barley; subsoil, gravel. The area comprises 1,662 acres of land and 1 of water; rateable value, £4,148; the population in 1891 was 966 in the civil, and 866 in the ecclesiastical parish.

A School Board of 5 members was formed 1 Feb. 1876: H. C. Canham, Sudbury, clerk to the board.

Board School (mixed & infants), erected, with master's house, in 1878 for 160 children; average attendance, 130.
