Historical Description

GREAT WHELNETHAM is a parish and village on the river Lark, 1 mile west from Whelnetham station, in the adjoining parish of Litle Whelnetham, on the Sudbury and Bury section of the Great Eastern railway and 3 ½ south-east from Bury St. Edmunds, in the North Western division of the county, Thingoe and Thedwastre petty sessional division, hundred of Thedwastre, Thingoe union, Bury St. Edmunds county court district, rural deanery of Homingsheath, archdeaconry of Sudbury and diocese of Ely. The church of St. Thomas A'Becket is a small structure of stone and flint in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, north aisle, south porch and a turret with cupola containing one bell: there are 140 sitings. The register dates from the year 1561. The living is a rectory, net income £277, with 50 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of and held since 1873 by the Rev. George Edward Badeley B.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge. Here was once a priory of Crutched (or Crossed) Friars, dedicated to St. Thomas the Martyr, and a cell, before 1273, to the principal house of that order near the Tower of London. The Marquess of Bristol and James Henry Porteus Oakes esq. of Nowton, who is lord of the manor, are the principal landowners; there are several small landowners. The soil is mixed; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, oats and barley. The area is 1,493 acres; assessable value, £1,144; the population in 1891 was 362.

Sicklesmere is a hamlet adjoining, principally in this parish, but partly in that of Little Whelnetham, on the river Lark.

National School (mixed), built in 1849, to hold 80 children; average attendance, 50.
