Historical Description

GRUNDISBURGH is a village and parish, 3 miles north-west from Woodbridge and about 2 north from Bealings station on the Ipswich and Lowestoft section of the Great Eastern railway, in the South Eastern division of the county, Carlford hundred, Woodbridge petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Cariford, archdeaconry of Suffolk and diocese of Norwich. The church of St. Mary is an ancient structure of flint in the Florid Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave, south aisle, or chapel, and a tower of brick at the south-west angle, erected in 1731, with funds left for the purpose by Mr. Robert Thinge, and containing a clock and 8 bells: on the south side is a chapel, erected in 1527, to the memory of Thomas and Alicia Wall: the nave has a finely carved oak roof, restored in 1888: the ancient font has carved figures on its sides: in the chancel are monuments to the Blois family, including William Blois, ob. 10 Jan. 1621: a fine carved screen, which has been partially restored, separates the chancel from the nave: the church was restored internally and reseated in 1874: the east and west windows are new, and the others have been partially restored, at a cost of about £700, under the direction of Mr. Hakewill, of Playford, architect: the organ was erected in 1878, at a cost of £265: the nave and north aisle were restored in 1891, from designs and under the direction of Mr. H. J. Green, architect, of Norwich: there are 276 sittings, 70 being free. The register dates from the year 1540. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £350, including 46 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of Trinity College, Cambridge, and held since 1894 by the Rev. Alfred Edward Flaxman MA. of Trinity College, Cambridge. There is a Baptist chapel here. The town estate consisting of some cottages and About 27 acres of land, let for about £40 yearly, was the gift of the Rev. John Yate. In 1730 Robert Thinge left a yearly rent-charge of £2 12s. for a weekly distribution of bread among the poor. J. Lucock left funds for the purchase of £284 £3 10s. per Cent. Annuities, the dividends to be applied as follows: £5 for a weekly distribution of threepenny loaves, £5 for the support of a Sunday school and the residue to be annually distributed in bread and coals among the poor. The late Samuel Taylor Dawson also left a bequest of £200, similarly invested, to supply coals to those in needy circumstances. The Village Club and Institute, established in 1877, and affiliated to the parent society at Ipswich, was enlarged in 1885, and rebuilt and again enlarged in 1890; the library contains 140 volumes. A Parish room was built in 1891. The Gurdon Lodge of Odd Fellows is held at the Dog inn. Grundisburgh Hall, the property of Lord Cranworth, but at present (1900) unoccupied, is pleasantly seated in the midst of a well-wooded park and pleasure grounds of 24 acres. Lord Cranworth, of Letton Hall, who is lord of the manor, Thomas Tacon and Robert Collins esqrs. and the trustees of the late Thomas Read are the principal landowners. The soil is mixed; subsoil, loam, and produces good crops of grain, beet and turnips. The area is 1,871 acres; rateable value, £2,850; the population in 1891 was 822.

A School Board of 5 members was formed compulsorily 30 June, 1873, for the United District of Grundisburgh & Burgh.

Board Schools (mixed), built in 1875, at a cost of £2,100, for the parishes of Grundisburgh & Burgh, for 225 boys & girls & 54 infants; average attendance, 63 boys, 57 girls & 72 infants: the infants’ school was enlarged in 1895 at a cost of £170: there is a detached house for the master, built in 1876.
