Historical Description

Hadleigh, a large town, seated in a bottom, by the river Breton, at the distance of sixty-four miles from London. It formerly enjoyed the privileges of a corporation, and was governed by a mayor, aldermen, and common-council; but a quo warranto being brought against them, they surrendered their charter in the reign of King James II., and no other has been granted since. Its greatest ornament is the church, which stands in the middle of the town, and is a handsome building, with a spire steeple. Our antiquarians are said to have a great respect for this structure, on account of its being the burial-place of Guthrum, or Gormo, King of Denmark, who being overcome in battle by King Alfred, was by his persuasion baptized, and afterwards obtained the government of the country of the East-Angles, over which he reigned twelve years, and dying in the year 889, was interred in this church. This town was also rendered remarkable for the martyrdom of Dr. Rowland Taylor, rector of this church, who was burnt on the common in this parish, improperly called Aldham-common. On the spot where he died was a stone, with a mis-spelt inscription to the following purpose:

"Anno 1555.

Dr. Taylor, for defending what was good,

In this place shed his blood."

About the year 1497, twelve alms-houses were founded by Dr. Pykenham, which yet remain. The woollen manufacture, which once flourished in this town, is reduced to the spinning of yarn for the manufactures of Norwich. The market-day is on Monday, and it had formerly another on Saturday. Hadleigh, in 1821, contained 576 houses, and 2929 inhabitants.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

HADLEIGH is a market town, parish, head of a county court district, and has a terminal station on the Hadleigh branch of the Great Eastern railway from Bentley junction, 64 miles from London, 10 west from Ipswich, 9 north-west from Manningtree and 11 east from Sudbury by road, in the Southern division of the county, hundred, petty sessional division and union of Cosford, rural deanery of Hadleigh, archdeaconry of Sudbury and diocese of Ely. The river Brett, which is not navigable, and which has its rise at Brettenham, flows behind the town and falls into the Stour near Stratford St. Mary, in this county. Hadleigh was formerly incorporated, but surrendered its charter and writ of quo warranto in the reign of James II. The “Local Government Act of 1858 " (21 and 22 Vict. c. 98), was adopted here 28 Sep. 1869, but under the provisions of the “Local Government Act, 1894” (56 and 57 Vict. c. 73), the town is now governed by an Urban District Council of 15 members; it is lighted with gas from works in Bridge street, the property of the Hadleigh Gas Consumers’ Co. Limited. The church of St. Mary is an ancient and handsome edifice of flint 162 feet long and 73 feet wide, in the Early English and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower, erected in 1495, with a lofty spire of timber, cased with lead, and containing a clock and 8 bells; at the ends of the aisle are good parclose screens: the ancient font is Early Decorated, with rich tracery on the bowl: the pulpit was erected as a memorial to the Very Rev. Henry Barry Knox: the stained east window, comprising several memorial lights, was erected in 1875, at a cost of £450, defrayed by several of the parishioners; there are other memorial windows to Dr. Rowland Taylor, sometime rector here, who suffered martyrdom on Aldham Common in 1555; to Mrs. Knox, second wife of the Very Rev. H. B. Knox, and to the Very Rev. Edward Spooner MA. late rector, who died in 1899, and Mrs. Spooner, his first wife; there are also some brasses, the oldest of which is to Dr. Rowland Taylor, mentioned above: the rest include a female figure, 1593; one to William Foorthe and Dorothie, his wife, 1599; and others as late as 1637: in the chancel is a stone inscribed to David Wilkins D.D. editor of “Concilia Magnae Britanniae,” ob. 1745: the exterior of the church was renovated in 1854—5, at a cost of about £1,100, and in 1870 the chancel was restored and reseated at a cost of £1,400, defrayed by the Very Rev. H. B. Knox, then rector: there are 1,000 sittings, 400 being free: the churchyard was closed in 1859. The earliest date of the register is November 26th, 1558. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £780, with residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of Canterbury, and held since 1899 by the Very Rev. Ralph Milburn Blakiston MA. of Magdalene College, Cambridge, co-Dean of Bocking and F.S.A. The Mission Church on Hadleigh Heath, was erected in 1878 and restored in 1891. The Congregational chapel, in Market place, was erected in 1835, and restored in 1890 at a cost of £1,200. There are also Baptist and Primitive Methodist chapels. The Cemetery, situated just outside the town, is 3 ½ acres in extent, and was opened in July 1856; it is under the control of a Burial Board of nine members. The Rector’s gateway, near the church, is a fine structure of brick dating from 1490, and was built by William Pykenham LL.D, archdeacon of Suffolk in 1471, who died in 1497. A short distance from the town, on the road to Aldham, is another fine old gate-house and a barn, both excellent specimens of brick-work, and the town itself contains several ancient houses of interest, especially in Benton street and High street. The Corn Exchange was built in 1813 by voluntary contributions and restored in 1895. The Town Hall was erected in 1851 on the Market Feoffment property, by the trustees, who hold all the market dues. The Police Station, built in 1855, at a cost of about £1,100, occupies the site of the old White Horse inn. The Hadleigh Young Men’s Institute and reading room was established 1862. The Mutual Improvement Society, established in 1875, has 200 members, and meetings are held in the Girls’ National School-room every Monday from October to April for lectures, debates and musical entertainments. The Girls’ Friendly Society has about 72 members. The parish library in connection with the parish church is at the Girls’ National school, and comprises about 800 volumes. There is a cocoanut matting manufactory, carried on by Messrs. Cooke, Sons and Co. of 12 Friday street, London, and another carried on by Messrs. Firmin and Co. who are also rope, twine, sack and cloth manufacturers; some extensive malthouses, and several corn mills. The market for the sale of cattle, sheep and pigs and general produce is held on Monday. The almshouses, built in 1887, in George street, at a cost of £1,500, were originally founded by Dr. William Pykenham, mentioned above; the new buildings consist of a block of 14 houses, to hold 28 inmates, viz., 14 men and 14 widows and also an attached chapel which was thoroughly restored in 1890 at the cost of the late Dean Spooner and Mrs. Spooner; the foundation stone was laid on Jubilee day by Joseph Rand esq. who gave the sum of £1,000 towards the erection; these almshouses are now (1900) supported from the estates of the Grand Feoffment charities. In Benton street are almshouses for eight inmates. Ann. Beaumont’s charity is for educating and apprenticing lads of the town. Hadleigh Hall, formerly the manor house, now belongs to and is occupied by Lady Jackson. Thomas Woolner B.A. and a distinguished sculptor was born here Oct. 17th,1826 and died in London Oct.7th.1892. There are three manors, viz. Cosford Hall, Hadleigh Hall and Topesfield Hall: Charles John Grimwade esq. is lord of the two latter. The principal landowners are Felix Thornley Cobbold esq. of Felixstowe, Robert Hyatt Cook esq. Lieut.-Col. Robert Hamilton-Lloyd-Anstruther, of Hintlesham, C. C. Eley esq. of East Bergholt, Wm.
