Historical Description

Haverhill, a long thoroughfare town, forty-nine miles north-north-east of London, partly in this county and partly in Essex. It appears to have been formerly of much greater consequence than it is at present, for it had two churches, or at least a church and a chapel, and the ruins of one of them are still to be seen. Here is a charity- school, and a small market on Wednesdays. The trade of this place has increased considerably of late years, in consequence of some respectable manufactories starting here. The population in 1821 was 1649.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

HAVERHILL is an ancient market town and parish and head of a county court district, 8 miles west from Glare and 54 from London, in the Southern division of the county, Risbridge union and petty sessional division, county, Risbridge hundred, union and petty sessional division, rural deanery of Clare, archdeaconry of Sudbury and diocese of Ely, a portion, called Haverhill Hamlet, was formerly in Essex, but the parish is now wholly in Suffolk. The town consists chiefly of one broad street about a mile in length, is well drained, and under the provisions of the “Local Government Act, 1894” (56 and 57 Vict. c. 73), is governed by an Urban District Council of 13 members, the parish having been originally constituted a Local Government district in 1878. Here is a station on the branch of the Great Eastern railway from Cambridge to Sudbury and Bury St. Edmunds, also the junction of the Colne Valley line to Chapell and Mark’s Tey, via Halstead. The Town is lighted with gas from works erected in 1854, at a cost of £800, by a company, from whom they were purchased in 1886 by the Local Board. The church of St. Mary is a spacious edifice of flint and rubble with stone dressings, in the Late Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, chapel, south porch and a tower containing 5 bells: the east window is stained, and there are several others, all memorials: the reredos is of alabaster, and the communion table, sedilia and other fittings of carved oak; in the church is a monument to Dr. John Ward, preacher here in the 16th century: the church was restored in 1867, at a cost of £2,300, when the nave arcades were rebuilt and its flat panelled ceiling, as well as the vaulted roof of the chancel, effectively enriched; the flooring was also re-laid, the interior reseated with open benches and the west gallery removed; the arches in the chancel, previously bricked up, were opened and the north door, greatly admired for its exquisitely carved arch, has been beautifully restored: there are 600 sittings, 340 being free. The register dates from the year 1660. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £109, with residence, in the gift of Sir George H. Beaumont bart. The Congregational chapel, Hamlet road, erected at a total cost of £5,800, is a structure of red brick with stone facings, in the Early English style, from designs by Mr. Charles Bell F.R.I.BA, of London, and has a tower and spire, rising to a height of 120 feet, the cost of which, amounting to £800, was defrayed by the late D. Gurteen esq. sen. (d. 1894): a new organ was presented in 1899 as a memorial, by the Gurteen family: there are sittings, including the gallery, for 850 persons. The old Congregational chapel is now used as a Sunday school. The Congregational chapel, in Withersfield road, with Sunday schools adjoining, was erected in 1891, at a cost of £3,000, from designs by Messrs. Searl and Son, architects, of London, and is of brick with stone dressings: it will seat 600 persons. There are also Baptist and Primitive Methodist chapels. The cemetery, formed in 1867 at a cost of £1,600, contains a mortuary chapel with a turret and spire, and is under the control of the Urban District Council, acting as a Burial Board, in 1897 2 acres were added at a cost of about £500, and the area is now 4 acres. The Town Hall, presented to the town in 1883 by the late Daniel Gurteen esq. to commemorate his “golden wedding,” at a cost, including site, of £5,000, is a spacious building of red brick, with white stone dressings, in the Domestic Gothic style, erected from designs by Mr. E. Sharman, architect, of Wellingborough, and containing on the ground floor a reading room, committee rooms, large lecture room and billiard and chess rooms, with offices in the rear, and on the floor above, a large and lofty hall, with a gallery and orchestra, in which is an organ, presented by D. Gurteen, jun. esq. The Corn Exchange was erected in 1889 by the Haverhill Corn Exchange Co. Lim.

The Savings Bank, established in 1836, was discontinued in 1894. The market is held on Friday, and there is also a weekly sale of fat and store stock in the yard adjoining the Rose and Crown hotel, conducted by Mr. Charles Boardman, with which have been amalgamated the sales formerly held here by Messrs. Balls, and very largely attended. The principal manufactory here is that of Messrs. Gurteen and Sons, for the making of textile fabrics, drabbet, cheesecloth, towels, huckaback, crash, scryms and various other cotton and linen fabrics; also of crinoline and horse hair cloth and rugs and mats; they also manufacture clothing for home trade and exportation, and employ upwards of 2,500 persons. There are brick works here, the earth being of an excellent quality. Among the persons of note connected with this place may be mentioned Thomas Cobb, a native of Haverhill, who in 1555 suffered martyrdom at Thetford. Here also was born Dr. John Ward, one of Fuller’s “worthies,” and sometime vicar of Haverhill: he had three sons, all men of great eminence, who suffered much persecution for their faith: Samuel Ward, born here in 1577, and appointed (4 Nov. 1605) town preacher of Ipswich, was prosecuted and punished in the High Commission Court at the Star Chamber in 1634—5, on account of his extreme Puritan opinions and undue freedom of speech: he died 8 March, 1639—40: Nathaniel Ward, born here between 1587 and 1580 was MA. of Emmanuel College, Cambridge, and rector of Stondon Massey, Essex, but deprived in 1633, and in 1637 emigrated to New England and formed one of the first settlements in that country, at a place in Massachusetts then called “Agawam,” but afterwards named “Ipswich;” returning to England in Jan. 1646—7, he became, in 1648, rector of Shenfield, Essex, and there died about 1653: John Ward, the third son, MA. of Emmanual College, Cambridge, was rector of Dennington, and from 1640 to 1642 rector of St. Clement’s, Ipswich; he died 18 April, 1662, and was buried in that church. Samuel Farrclough, another celebrated Puritan, was born here in 1594; he was rector of Barnardiston and of Kedington, but was ejected for nonconformity, and died in 1667. The Turnour family were long seated here: Henry Tumour, buried here in 1464, was the ancestor of Sir Edward Turnour kt. M.P. Essex, Speaker of the House of Commons, 1661—71, and chief baron of the Exchequer, d. 4 March, 1676, whose descendants in the 18th century were created barons and Earls of Winterton. In 1643, under warrant of the Earl of Manchester, certain pictures and ornaments of the church, held to be superstitious, were demolished. In 1665 the greater part of the town was destroyed by fire, through which much of its ancient character was lost. In 1757 and the following year, a number of spearheads and urns were discovered here; some of the urns were of pale blue glass, hermetically sealed, and capable of holding two gallons; they were three parts filled with bones, and amongst them was a lachrymatory, or vessel for preserving tears. In 1787, fifty gold coins, attributed to Boadicea, Queen of the Iceni, were found here in a mound of blue clay; the smallest coin weighed 100 grains; the largest was concave on one side and convex on the other, a form peculiar to the coins of this queen. Traces of a castle or fortified place still exist at a short distance from the town.

The manor of Haverhill in 9 Edw. I. (1280—1) was held by Henry de Helin (or Helion), probably one of the Helions family of Bumpstead, in Essex; in 4 Hen. IV. (1402—3) it was held by Lord Stafford, and in 1450 by Humphrey (Stafford), Duke of Buckingham. K.G. Lord Constable, who was slain at the battle of Northampton, 10 July, 1460; in 1483 the manor belonged to Henry, Lord Grey of Coduor, who died 8 April, 1496. Sir George Howland William Beaumont bart. of Coleorton Hall, Leicestershire, who is lord of the manor, William Basham Gurteen esq. of Chauntry House, Haverhill, Jabez Gurteen esq. of Haverhill, Charles Brogden Sperling esq. of Dynes Hall, Halstead, Essex, and Queen’s College, Cambridge, are principal landowners. The soil is chiefly clay; subsoil, clay. The crops are of the usual kind. The area is 2,531 acres; rateable value, £12,950; the population in 1891 was 4,587.
