Historical Description

HENSTEAD is a village and parish, 5 miles south-east from Beccles station on the Great Eastern railway and 7 miles south-west from Lowestoft, in the Northern division of the county, Blything and Wangford hundred, Blything petty sessional division and union, Beccles and Bungay county court district, rural deanery of North Dunwich, archdeaconry of Suffolk and diocese of Norwich. The church of St. Mary is a building of flint in the Perpendicular style, with a thatched roof, and consists of a long nave, south porch and an embattled western tower containing one bell: the south porch has a Norman doorway; there is a similar doorway on the north side, now bricked up: in the nave is a memorial window to Charles F. Sheriffe, d. 1874: there are 250 sittings, 99 being free. The register dates from the year 1539. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £240, with residence and 46 acres of glebe, in the gift of R. T. O. Sheriffe esq. and held since 1862 by the Rev. George Ayton Whitaker MA. of Trinity College, Cambridge. The parish has a few small charities, part of which are distributed in coals to the poor. Henstead Hall, the property of Robert H. Inglis Palgrave esq. and now occupied by Sir Thomas Vere Sherlock Gooch bart. (a minor) is a large mansion containing a rare collection of paintings by eminent masters: the gardens are extensive and beautifully laid out. Robert H. Inglis Palgrave esq. of Belton, who is lord of the manor, and Miles Barne esq. of Sotterley Hall, are the principal landowners. The soil is mixed; subsoil, various. The chief crops are wheat, barley and roots. The area is 1,953 acres of land and 6 of water; rateable value, £1,761; the population in 1891 was 488.
