Historical Description

HEPWORTH is a parish and scattered village 8 ½ miles north-west from Firiningham station on the Ipswich and Norwich section of the Great Eastern railway, and 11 ½ north-east from Bury St. Edmunds, in the North Western division of the county, Blackbourn hundred and petty sessional division, Thetford union and county court district, Blackburne rural deanery, archdeaconry of Sudbury and diocese of Ely. The church of St. Peter, standing on high ground, is an ancient structure of rubble stone, chiefly in the Early English style, with a thatched roof, was burned down on Easter Monday, 1898, but has been rebuilt so far as possible in the style of the former church, and consists of chancel, nave, south porch and a western tower containing a clock and 5 bells: the new nave has a double hammer-beam roof of English oak, and the chancel is paved with black and white marble: the font cover, which is of oak, carved with niches for figures, was restored in 1872. The restoration of the church was completed in September, 1899, at a cost of about £2,300. The register dates from the year 1688. The living is a discharged rectory, net yearly value £380, including 40 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Kang's College, Cambridge, and held since 1883 by the Rev. William Charles Green MA. late fellow of that college. There is a Primitive Methodist chapel. The charities consist of about 44 acres of land and some cottages, the net proceeds of which amount to about £50 yearly, which sum is now (1900) under the direction of the Charity Commissioners divided in moieties between the church and fuel for the poor. There is also a fuel allotment of 14 acres, the proceeds of which are also expended in coed for the poor. Hepworth House, a substantial mansion of red brick, is the seat of Thomas Tindal Methold esq. B.A., J.P. The trustees of the late Sir Thomas Thornhill bart. of Pakenham, who are lords of the manor of Reves Hall, Master Stephens, Thomas Tindal Methold esq. and the Bury St. Edmunds Guildhall feoffees are the principal landowners. The soil is generally heavy; subsoil, clay, some portion mixed. The crops are on the four-course system. The area is 1,691 acres; rateable value, £2,121; the population in 1891 was 439.
