Historical Description

HERRINGFLEET is a small parish with Che houses very much detached, 1 mile north from Somerleyton station, 7 miles south-west-by-south from Yarmouth and 6 north-west from Lowestoft, in the Northern division of the county, Mutford and Lothingland incorporation, petty sessional division and hundred and Lowestoft county court district, rural deanery of Lothingland, archdeaconry of Suffolk and diocese of Norwich; the navigable Waveney separates this parish from Norfolk: the East Suffolk section of the Great Eastern railway has a station here, called St. Olave’s. The church of St. Margaret is a structure of flint and brick with stone facings, in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and round western tower containing 2 bells: there is some good stained glass: the church affords 104 sittings. The register dates from the year 1706. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £100, in the gift of Col. Hill Mussenden Leathes, and held since 1899 by the Rev. Sydenham Lynes Dixon, who is also vicar of St. John’s, Lowestoft. The Augustinian priory of SS. Mary and Olave was founded here in 1239 by Roger Fitz-Osbert; but few remains of the buildings now exist: at the Dissolution there were six canons and revenues valued at £49 11s. 7d. Col. Leathes receives a yearly payment from the rector of the adjoining parish of Burgh, in acknowledgment of his rights as prior of St. Olave’s. The Herringfleet hills in this parish command a fine view of the Waveney valley. Herringfleet Hall is the property and residence of Col. Hill Mussenden Leathes J.P. who is sole owner of the parish; the mansion, which stands in a well-wooded park, contains a choice selection of pictures by the old masters, the gems of the collection being six highly finished cabinet pictures by Herman Van der Myn, bought in the early part of the reign of George I. for £10,000. The Old Manor House and Blocka Hall are now occupied as farmhouses. The soil is mixed; subsoil, clay and sand. The chief crops are wheat, barley, rye, roots and hay. The area is 1,282 acres of land, 23 of water, 15 of tidal water and 40 of foreshore; rateable value, £2,010; the population in 1891 was 187.

National School (mixed), for 38 children; average attendance, 29.
