Historical Description

HINTLESHAM is a village and parish, 3 miles north-east from Haydon station, on the Hadleigh branch of the Great Eastern railway, 4 ½ north-east from Hadleigh and 5 ½ west from Ipswich, in the South Eastern division of the county, Samford hundred, petty sessional division and union, Ipswich county court district, rural deanery of Samford, archdeaconry of Suffolk and diocese of Norwich. The church of St. Nicholas is an ancient building of flint, principally in the Early English style, with an admixture of Transition and Perpendicular, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower containing 5 bells: the stained east window was presented by the Hon. Mrs. Lloyd Anstruther, and there is a monument to the Misses Lloyd, the last of whom died in 1837, several monuments in the Elizabethan style to members of the Timperley family, and a brass tablet, placed in 1880 to the memory of Colonel J. H. L. and Mrs. Anstruther: the church was restored in 1850—51, chiefly at the expense of the late Col. J. H. L. Anstruther and the rector, and affords 300 sittings, 200 being free. The register dates from the year 1652. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £330, with 44 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of Robert Anstruther Deane esq. and held since 1900 by the Rev. Anthony Anstruther Wilkinson, Lic. Theol. of University College, Durham. Here is a Primitive Methodist chapel. Miss Lloyd left £10 for the education of five poor children and £10 for coals, for the poor. Hintlesham Hall, standing in a well-wooded park, adjoining the village, was formerly the property and residence of the family of Timperley, who built the mansion in the reign of Queen Elizabeth: the estate was sold to R. Powys esq. in 1720, whose widow resold the property in 1745 to Sir Richard Lloyd, Chief Baron of the Exchequer 1759—61, from whose family, in 1837, it passed by bequest to the Anstruthers, and is now the property of Lieut.-Col. Robert Hamilton Lloyd Anstruther, but at present (1900) unoccupied: the hall contains a valuable collection of paintings by Vandyke, Gainsborough, Sir Peter Lely and other eminent artists. Lieut.-Col. R. H. L. Anstruther D.L., J.P. of 2 Beaufort Gardens, London S.W. is lord of the manor and principal landowner. The soil is mixed; subsoil, gravel and day. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats, beans and peas. The area is 2,801 acres; rateable value, £2,480; the population in 1891 was 567 in the civil and 575 in the ecclesiastical parish.

By Local Government Board Order 16,447, March 24, 1884, a detached part of Hintlesham, known as The Grove, was transferred to Washbrook.

National School (mixed) with 2r. 12p. of playground was given by the late Misses Lloyd. The school estate consists of 6 acres of land, let for £7 yearly, to teach 12 poor scholars writing & arithmetic, but which now goes towards the expenses of free education. A large schoolroom was erected in 1874 for the united parishes of Hintlesham & Chattisham, in connection with the National Society, & will hold 150 children; average attendance, 125.
