Historical Description
Hoxne, or Hoxon, which gives name to the hundred; but it is more remarkable for being the place where the Danes martyred Edmund, King of the East-Angled, in the year 870, for refusing to renounce his faith in Christ, by binding him to a tree and shooting him to death with arrows. His body was removed to St. Edmundsbury, and there interred. A chapel was built on the spot where he was slain, which was dedicated to him, and afterwards converted into a house of Benedictine Monks, as a cell to Norwich; at the dissolution its revenue was of the clear value of 18l. 1s. per annum.
HOXNE is a large village and parish, head of a union, on the south bank of the Waveney and on the borders of Norfolk, 5 miles south-east from Diss station on the Ipswich and Norwich section and 3 ½ north-east from Eye terminal station on a branch of the Great Eastern railway, in the North Eastern division of the county, hundred and petty sessional division of the Hoxne, Eye county court district, rural deanery of Hoxne, archdeaconry of Suffolk and diocese of Norwich. The church of SS. Peter and Paul is a handsome building of flint, with stone dressings, in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, north aisle, south porch and a lofty embattled western tower with crocketed pinnacles, containing a clock, erected in 1887, and 5 bells: the organ, originally mechanical, was presented to the church by the late Gen. Sir E. Kerrison bart. in 1836 and subsequently converted into a finger organ, at a cost of about £100: at the east end of the aisle is a marble monument with life-size figure to Thomas Maynard esq. d. 1742: on the south wall is a beautifully carved memorial of Caen, stone, to Gen. Sir Edward Kerrison bart., K.C.B., G.C.H. died 9 March, 1853; also to Sir Edward C. Kerrison bart. deceased 1886: a stained window has been erected to the memory of a former vicar, the Rev. J. H. Hodgson MA. who died 1868: the east window and several others are filled with stained glass: a carved oak screen was erected across the tower arch in 1878: on the floor near the chancel are three brasses to members of the Thurston family, dated respectively, 1606, 1613 and 1640: the chancel was extensively repaired in 1879 by the Ecclesiastical Commissioners: there are 450 sittings. The registers date from the year 1581. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £283, with 18 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of Lady Bateman, and held since 1888 by the Rev. Cecil Downton B.A. of Queens’ College, Cambridge. The Baptist chapel, erected in 1864, has been enlarged and will seat 500. The Plymouth Brethren have also a meeting house here. Adjoining the churchyard on the south-east are five almshouses, erected in 1844, by the late Gen. Sir Edward Kerrison bart. Here was anciently a Benedictine priory, founded by Herbert Losinga, Bishop of Norwich, in 1101, as a cell to Norwich, and dedicated to St. Edmund; at the Dissolution the revenues were valued at £18. In the centre of a field near Abbey Farm is a stone cross, erected in 1879, to mark the spot where, according to tradition, stood the tree against which King Edmund was shot Nov. 20th, A.D. 870; the tree fell August, 1848, by its own weight. St. Edmund’s Hall, a building of flint stone and red brick, was erected in 1879, by Sir E. C. Kerrison bart. as a reading room; the library consists of about 400 volumes: there is also a small collection of ancient implements of war, &c. discovered in the parish. Oakley Park, on the south-west of the parish, is the residence of Arthur Wm. Hy. Hay esq., J.P.: the mansion is a beautiful structure in the Classic style, overlooking the vale of the Dove: the eastern front is relieved by columns and there is a gallery 80 feet in length: the park contains above 600 acres, handsomely wooded, through which the river Dove flows, and passing in front of the mansion afterwards joins the Waveney: at the end of a walk in the park stands a Gothic cross, erected as a memorial to “Harlequin" and other favourite chargers of the late Gen. Sir E. Kerrison. A bridge, built by the late Sir E. C. Kerrison bart. crosses the Gold brook. The Depperhaugh, so called from its close proximity to a large wood bearing that name, is a fine mansion belonging to Lady Walker, and commands a beautiful view of the surrounding country; it is now (1900) unoccupied. Thorpe Hall, an old moated farmhouse, about 3 miles south-east from the church, is a fine specimen of red brickwork with stone dressings and excellent chimneys, and is occupied by Mr. Thomas Kent. Oak Lawn, half a mile distant, standing in its own grounds of about 20 acres, is the property of Misses Hanbury. Lady Bateman, of Shobdon Court, Herefordshire, is lady of the manors of Hoxne Hall with the Priory, and owner of the greatest part of the land; the remainder belongs to John Tudor Frere esq. of Roydon, Sir B. W. Walker bart. Lord Henniker, Hon. Chas. Bateman-Hanbury and others. The land is of a mixed soil; subsoil, gravel and clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley, beans and peas. The area is 4,031 acres of land and 25 of water; assessable value, £3,517; the population in 1891 was 934 in the civil and 938 in the ecclesiastical parish.
Cross Street is a populous part of the parish, about 1 mile south from the church; other portions of the parish extend in a south-easterly direction, for nearly 5 miles and run between Denham and Stradbroke.
