Historical Description

HUNTINGFIELD is a village and parish, 5 miles west-by-south from Halesworth station on the Ipswich and Lowestoft section of the Great Eastern railway, in the North Eastern division of the county, Blything hundred, petty sessional division and union, Halesworth county court district, rural deanery of North Dunwich, archdeaconry of Suffolk and diocese of Norwich. The church of St. Mary, standing within the rectory grounds and surrounded by tall oaks and elms, is a building of flint, dating from about 1180 to 1150, and consisting of large chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and tower containing 5 bells: at the east end of the north aisle is a mortuary chapel belonging to Lord Huntingfield (now used as a vestry), in the vault beneath which many members of the Vanneck family lie interred: in the church was formerly a chantry, endowed with lands of the yearly value of £4 17s. 6d. and also a chapel dedicated to St. Andrew and St. Margaret: there is an altar tomb in the chancel, with a brass to John Paston esq. father of Bridget (Paston) 1st wife of Lord Chief Justice Sir Edward Coke, a small brass to an infant daughter of the judge, and a monument to Anne (Moulton), wife of John Paston esq.: the roof was richly illuminated by the late Mrs. Holland, wife of the Rev. William Holland MA. rector 1848—92: the stained east window is a memorial to the late Lord Huntingfield, who died at Heveningham, 10 Aug. 1844: the font has a handsome and lofty carved oak canopy, given by the Rev. William Holland MA. in memory of his wife (d. 1878), and there is a stoup in the south porch: there are 260 sittings. The register dates from the year 1565, but is not perfect. The living is a rectory, consolidated with Cookley in 1773, net yearly value £550, including 145 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Rev. Thomas D. Turner MA. of Beccles, and held since 1892 by the Rev. Richard Spencer Turner B.A. of Queen’s College, Oxford. The charities belonging to the parish consist of lands and tenements, now (1900) amounting to about £30 yearly: in 1862 a scheme for their future regulation and management was obtained from the Charity Commissioners, according to which the net income is yearly divided into three equal parts and severally applied by the trustees to the repairs of the church, the support of the school and the benefit of the poor: there is in addition a yearly rent-charge of £4, left in 1725 for the school, by Berry Snelling; the school was built in 1849. In the time of Edward the Confessor, Edric of Laxfield held Huntingfield, of which he was deprived at the Conquest, when it was given to Robt. Malet, lord of the honor of Eye, whose under-tenant, when Domesday Book was made (A.D. 1086), was Walter, son of Alberic: Roger de Huntingfield (the first of this name mentioned) was probably the son of this Walter, who assumed the name of the parish in which he lived, as was the custom of the successful Normans. The manor continued in this family until 1382, when by the death of his mother, who was the daughter of Sir John de Norwich, knight, by Alice de Huntingfield, Michael de la Pole, Earl of Suffolk, came into possession of it: it continued in this family until 1513, when Edmund de la Pole, Earl of Suffolk, who then possessed it, was attainted: his wife, Margaret, however, held it for her life, after whose death it fell to the Crown, and Henry VIII. in 1531 granted it to Charles Brandon, Duke of Suffolk: it, however, soon reverted to the Crown and formed part of the pension of £3,000 a year which was settled by Henry VIll. on his divorced wife, Anne of Cleves, who died in 1557; and Elizabeth in 1559 granted it to her cousin Lord Hunsdon, who was succeeded by his eldest son, who left an only daughter, and she, marrying Sir Thomas Berkeley, knight, had issue one daughter: this lady married Sir Robert Coke, knight, second son of Sir Edward Coke, Lord Chief Justice, and thus conveyed her estates into that family: previously, however, the Lord Chief Justice, then Edward Coke esq. had in 1582 married Bridget, daughter and heiress of John Paston esq. of Huntingfield Hall, and had acquired with her a fortune of £30,000 in lands in this and the neighbouring parishes; in 1754, Thomas Coke, Earl of Leicester, sold this property to Sir Joshua Vanneck bart. of Putney; and his son Joshua was, in 1796, created Baron Huntingfield, of Heveningham, and in this family the manor still continues. When Baron Hunsdon held the property it was honoured with a visit from his cousin Queen Elizabeth, who is stated to have shot a deer from an oak tree, still standing and known as Queen Elizabeth’s oak; the girth of this tree at seven feet from the ground is thirty-six feet. Lord Huntingfield is lord of the manor and owns nearly the whole of the land. The soil is much mixed, the hills being heavy and the valleys lighter; subsoil, principally clay. The chief crops are the usual cereals and roots. The area is 2,130 acres of land and 16 of water; rateable value, £2,016; the population in 1891 was 378.

National School (mixed), erected in 1849 & enlarged 1870, for 60 children; average attendance, 62.
