Historical Description
Icklingham, a village which has two parishes and two parish- churches, where was the ancient Roman station Combritonium, or, according to Horsley, Camboricum, which seems to have been half a mile in length, and to have extended at a small distance from the river. On the west side of the ruins is a square camp, which appears to have contained about twenty-five acres. The vallum is visible on all sides, except where the moorish ground has brought it to decay. Coins have been found here, particularly in a ploughed field half a mile north-west of the town; some have been found also in the moors, in digging, to fence or drain them; and about forty-four years ago, an ancient leaden cistern was discovered by a ploughman, who struck his share against the edge of it. To the west of the camp, upon Warren-hill, are three large barrows, each encompassed by a foss.
ICKLINGHAM is a township, comprising the parishes of St. James and All Saints, which are united for civil purposes and form one village, in the North Western division of the county, hundred and petty sessional division of Lackford, union and county court district of Mildenhall, rural deanery of Mildenhall, archdeaconry of Sudbury and diocese of Ely. The village, about a mile in length, stands on the north bank of the river Lark, a tributary of the Ouse, 5 miles south-south-west from Higham on the Cambridge, Newmarket and Bury branch railway, 8 north-west from Bury St. Edmunds and 5 east-south-east from Mildenhall. The two churches stand less than half a mile apart. St. James’, an ancient edifice, chiefly of flint, in various stylos, consists of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower containing one bell: there are memorial windows to the Gwilt family, including one to Major-Gen. Gwilt C.B. erected by his sister, Miss Gwilt, others to the family of Gibbs and one placed in 1894 to Mr. James Benstead, for over 60 years churchwarden; the church was completely restored in 1864, at a cost of £1,600, defrayed by the late Charles Edward Gibbs esq. and affords 220 sittings. All Saints’ church, standing at the upper end of the village, is an ancient structure of stone and rubble, in the Decorated style, consisting of chancel, nave, south aisle, south porch and a western tower containing 3 bells: the chancel floor is partly laid with the original tiles, which display varied geometrical patterns, figures of animals, flowers and human faces: the windows retain fragments of ancient stained glass and there is an octagonal stone font: the church was repaired, cleaned and the roof re-thatched in 1895. The register dates from the year 1568. The two rectories form one benefice, net yearly value £330, including 62 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Lord Iveagh K.P. There is a small Wesleyan chapel. Here are the water mills belonging to Messrs. Parker Brothers (Mildenhall), Limited. Alice Dix’s charity is applied to the maintenance of a dispensary, the provision of clothing for the poor and the support of the National school. It is now under the control of a body consisting of the old trustees with two persons appointed by the parish council. A Roman encampment once existed on the eastern side of the village, and numerous coins, urns and other antiquities have been found on this spot, including about 200 silver coins of various Roman emperors, turned up at different times by the plough. Icklingham Hall a mansion of brick and stone in the Italian style, rebuilt in 1854, is the property of Lord Iveagh K.P. and now (1900) occupied by Miss Buxton. Lord Iveagh K.P. who is lord of the manors of St. James’ and All Saints’ and Earl Cadogan K.G., P.C. are the chief landowners. The soil is light and sandy; sub-soil, gravel and chalk. The chief crops are wheat, barley and turnips. The area is 6,747 acres of land and 15 of water; rateable value, £2,630; the population in 1891 was 375.
Church of England National School (mixed), erected, with masters house, in 1855 by the late C. E. Gibbs esq. J.P. who left a sum of £1,000 invested for the part endowment of the school; it will hold 100 children; average attendance, 45.
