Historical Description

KEDINGTON is a parish on the river Stour, 2 ½ miles east-north-east from Haverhill station on the Cambridge and Long Melford section of the Great Eastern railway, and 5 west-north-west from Clare, in the Southern division of the county, Risbridge hundred, petty sessional division and union, Haverhill county court district, rural deanery of Clare, archdeaconry of Sudbury and diocese of Ely. Part of this parish was formerly in Essex, but it is now wholly in Suffolk. The church of SS. Peter and Paul is a building of flint and stone in the Early English style, with Perpendicular insertions, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower containing a clock and 5 bells: there are many ancient monuments, chiefly to the Barnardiston family, including one to Sir Thomas Barnardiston kt. ob. 1503, and buried at Great Coates, Lincs. and Elizabeth (Newport), his wife, ob. 1520, and interred here; the monument has recumbent effigies of both, with shields of arms: there is another monument to Sir Thomas Barnardiston kt. great grandson of the preceding, ob. 23 Dec. 1619, his 1st wife, Elizabeth (Hanchet), his 2nd wife, Anne (Bygrave) and a daughter; there are kneeling figures of both wives within arched recesses, and in front, on a raised tomb, lies the effigy of the knight, in armour, Tinder which is still visible the stone coffin said to contain his remains; the adjoining monument to their daughter has also a female figure in a kneeling position: at the east end of the south aisle and nave are two raised monuments, on each of which are two recumbent effigies; but the inscriptions are now illegible: the chancel is divided from the nave by a carved oak screen, dated 1619, on the top of which are placed several pieces of old armour: adjoining the screen still remains the canopied family pew of the Barnardistons, which is of very fine carved oak: the stone font is ancient, and in the vestry is an old oak table and chest: near the pulpit is an hour-glass stand: there are 250 sittings. The register dates from the year 1654. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £490, with 116 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of and held since 1868 by the Rev. Barrington Blomfield Syer B.A. of Corpus Christi college, Cambridge. The workhouse of the Risbridge union, which stands in this parish, is a spacious edifice of red brick, erected in 1856 at a cost of £18,000, and will hold 654 inmates; for particulars of the union see Haverhill. At the Domesday survey, Kedington was the lordship of Ralph Baynard, but being afterwards forfeited, it passed to Richard Fitz-Gilbert, lord of Clare, whose descendants assumed the title of Earls of Clare, and afterwards to the Barnardistons, who acquired it with the heiress of Newmarch, and long resided at the Hall, now no longer extant. The manorial rights are divided. Sir Joshua Thellusson Rowley bart. of Tendring Hall, the rector, H. C. Purkis esq. barrister, of London, Jabez Gurteen esq. W. B. Gurteen esq. J.P. of Haverhill, Hy. Pearle esq. of Little Wratting, Mr. Shephard, and Mrs. Skimgly are chief landowners. The soil is clay and loam; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley and roots. The area is 2,398 acres of land and 8 of water; rateable value, £2,562; the population in 1891 was 856, including 132 officers and inmates in Risbridge union workhouse.

Brockley Green lies 1 mile east.

National School (mixed), erected in 1876, for 140 children; average attendance, 105.
