Historical Description

KELSALE-CUM-CARLTON, formerly separate parishes, became united civilly 25 March, 1885, under the Divided Parishes Act; and the two ecclesiastical parishes are now consolidated and very extensive; situated about one mile and a quarter north from Saxmundham station on the Ipswich and Lowestoft section of the Great Eastern railway, in the North Eastern division of the county, Hoxne hundred, Blything union and petty sessional division, county court district of Framlingham and Saxmundham, rural deanery of South Dunwieh, archdeaconry of Suffolk and diocese of Norwich; the district is well wooded and in parts exceedingly picturesque. The church of SS. Mary and Peter, at Kelsale, standing on a hill on the north side of the village, is an ancient structure, principally of flint, in the Early Norman and later styles, consisting of chancel with south aisle and vestries, nave, south aisle, south porch and an embattled tower containing a clock and 8 bells, rehung in 1887; the clock was the gift of Mr. Samuel Clouting, who at his death left £100, the interest of which should be applied in keeping it in repair: the stained east window was erected in 1879 by Mr. and Mrs. Morrice, as a memorial to the Rev. Lancelot Robert Brown, rector from 1810, and there are four others, one of which is a memorial to Mrs. Davies, wife of the late rector: the reredos and brass lectern were presented in 1880; in the church is a monument with effigy to Mr. Samuel Clouting, mentioned above: there is a monument to the Russell family, dated 1754: the organ was erected in 1878 at a cost of £342: in 1877—8 the church was restored, the chancel, aisle and two vestries rebuilt at a cost of more than £2,000; the nave and south aisle were restored in 1882 at a further cost of £1,500, and the tower in 1890 at a cost of £150, when also a screen was erected and the chancel furnished with stalls of carved oak by the present rector, at a cost of £160: there are 600 sittings: the lych gate was erected in 1890 by the Rev. George Irving Davies MA. late rector 1868—94, to the memory of his wife. The register dates from the year 1539. The living is a rectory, with that of Carlton annexed, joint net income £460, with residence and 75 acres of glebe, in the gift of the trustees of the late H. A. S. Bence esq. of Thorington Hall, and held since 1894 by the Rev. George Herbert Dawson Davies, of Jesus College, Cambridge. The church of St. Peter, Carlton, is a building of flint with stone dressings in the Early English style, consisting of a chancel, nave, south porch and an embattled western tower of brick containing 4 bells: the pulpit, of carved oak, dates from 1626 and the communion table from 1630: the church was restored and re-seated in 1872 and the chancel in 1887: there are 96 sittings. The register commences from the year 1538. The Primitive Methodist chapel, built in 1851, will seat 150, and attached is a Sunday school, holding 100 children. The old Guildhall is used for the parish school. The Church Club, built in 1891 by the late rector, at a cost of £1,250, comprises on the ground floor, a residence, refreshment room, reading, billiard, bagatelle and smoking rooms and a library; the upper storey, approached by an outside staircase, contains a hall, 61 by 21 feet, and a smaller room. In the parish are lands and tenements, with rents amounting to £160 yearly, which sum is applied as follows: one-fourth to the repairs of the church, two-fourths for school purposes and one-fourth for the poor; other charities, amounting to about £16, are distributed by trustees appointed by the Parish Council. Here are clay and sand pits and potters’ earth is dug. Carlton Hall, standing in a large and finely wooded park, is the property of the Countess of Stradbroke, but is at present occupied by Captain George Edward Price R.N., J.P. Mrs. Percy Bence Trower, Mrs. Bence Lambert and Miss Bence are joint ladies of the manors. The principal landowners are the Countess of Stradbroke, Sir Ralph B. M. Blois bart. of Cockfield Hall, Joseph Muskett Yetts esq. Robert Flick esq. of Theberton Grange, Edward Woodyard esq. the National Provident Institution and the Rev. John George Pooley MA. rector of Stonham Aspall. The soil is heavy and mixed; subsoil, clay and sand. The chief crops are wheat, barley, peas, beans and roots, with a large portion of pasture land. The parish contains 3,615 acres of land and 5 of water; rateable value, £5,249; the population in 1891 was 1,038.
