Historical Description

KERSEY is a parish and village near the river Brett, in a picturesque valley, 2 ½ miles north-west from Hadleigh terminal station on a branch of the Great Eastern railway, in the Southern division of the county, Cosford hundred, petty sessional division and union, Hadleigh county court district, rural deanery of Hadleigh, archdeaconry of Sudbury and diocese of Ely. The church of St. Mary is an ancient structure of flint, consisting of chancel, nave, north aisle, north and south porches, and a lofty embattled western tower containing 6 bells: the prevailing style is Perpendicular, of which the tower is a fine example, but the aisle is Decorated: the piscina and sedilia are fine specimens of Late Perpendicular work: there are several monuments to the Sampson family, formerly of Sampson’s Hall: the chancel was rebuilt in 1862 by Kings College, Cambridge, and the windows were restored in 1887: in 1888 the pews were removed and replaced by chairs, and the interior refloored and renovated: there are 186 sittings. The register dates from the year 1542. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £210, including 1 acre of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Kings College, Cambridge, and held since 1879 by the Rev. William Brice Gray MA. of Jesus College, Cambridge. There are a few small charities consisting of land and cottages, left in 1580 by Robert; Nightingale. In the grounds of the Priory are the remains of the church of a priory of canons of the Order of St. Augustine, founded here before 1190 by Thomas de Burgo, and dedicated to St. Mary and St. Anthony; among the benefactors was Sir Nigel de Riffley; the remains suggest the idea that the church must have originally been a spacious and magnificent structure. The principal landowners are Kings College, Cambridge, who are lords of the manor, R. H. Cook esq. J.P. of Hadleigh, the trustees of John Spalding Arthey esq. and Robert Partridge esq. The soil is mixed; subsoil, gravel. The chief crops are wheat, barley and beans. The area is 1,510 acres; rateable value, £1,728; the population in 1891 was 482.

Parochial School (mixed), for 120 children; average attendance, 79.
