Historical Description

The village of Kessingland, which, from the ruins of its ancient and once beautiful church, appears to have been of much more celebrity than it is at present.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

KESSINGLAND is a parish and large village on the sea coast, 5 miles south from Lowestoft station on the Great Eastern railway and 9 south-east from Beccles, in the Northern division of the county, Mutford and Lothingland incorporation, petty sessional division and hundred, county court district of Lowestoft, rural deanery of Lothingland, archdeaconry of Suffolk and diocese of Norwich. The church of St. Edmund is an ancient building of flint with stone dressings, in the Perpendicular style, consisting of nave, the ruins of a south aisle, south porch, and a lofty western tower containing 5 bells: the richly ornamented octagonal font has deeply recessed sides, with niches, in each of which is the figure of a saint: the organ was erected in 1878 at a cost of £200: the church was reseated throughout in 1871 and has 360 sittings. The register dates from the year 1561. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £290, with 52 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Norwich, and held since 1894 by the Rev. Francis Wheler Randall Mason MA. of Pembroke College, Oxford. Here is a Wesleyan chapel, and there are reading rooms in the upper village and at the beach village. A considerable sum bequeathed for the repair of the church, owing to the depreciation in the value of the land, now produces only about £18 per year. There are a few small charities, and an allotment of land, the rent of which is expended in coal for the poor. On the beach is a coastguard station with dwellings for eleven families. This was anciently a place of considerable importance, having a weekly market on Tuesday, and a fair on the 20th November: the fair is now held on the 1st December. The “Sea Row,” apart of the parish once thickly populated, was swept away about 1834 by the action of the waves, and the encroachment of the sea still continues at the north end of the parish. John Watson esq. who is lord of the manor, and Sydney Ganning Herring esq. are the principal landowners. The soil is blue clay, and the subsoil sand. The chief crops are wheat, barley and roots. The area is 1,675 acres of land, 5 of water and 19 of foreshore; rateable value, £3,867: the population in 1891 was 1,275.

National, erected in 1869, for 200 children; average attendance, 113.

Mixed, for 140 children; average attendance, 92.
