Historical Description

LAWSHALL is a parish 4 ½ miles west by road from Cockfield station on the Bury and Long Melford section of the Great Eastern railway and 6 south from Bury St. Edmunds, in the Southern division of the county, Babergh hundred, Melford petty sessional division, Sudbury union, Bury St. Edmunds county court district, rural deanery of Lavenham, archdeaconry of Sudbury and diocese of Ely. The church of All Saints is a building of stone and flint in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, clerestoried nave of four bays, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower containing 5 bells: the east window, which is Early English, and two others, are stained: the church was thoroughly repaired and reseated in 1857, at an expense of about £6,000, and affords 500 sittings. The register dates from the year 1558. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £476, with 40 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of Lady De Saumarez, and held since 1899 by the Rev. Charles Bruce Clarkson MA. of Christ Church, Oxford. The Catholic church dedicated to Our Lady and St. Joseph, was built in 1870 at the expense of the late Sir E. R. Gage bart. and has a school attached. The charities include Stevens’ Charity, amounting to £2 6s. 8d. a year and Corder's of £1 10s. annually. Here is a manufactory of horsehair cloth for sofa and chair covers, which gives employment to a number of hands. Lord De Saumarez, of Shrubland Park, who is lord of the manor, James Henry Porteus Oakes esq. of Nowton Court, Bury, John Georgs Weller-Poley esq. of Boxted Hall, and Fredk. Jn. Methold esq. F.S.O. of Thorne Court, Shimpling, are the principal landowners. The soil is clay; subsoil, loam. The chief crops are wheat, oats, barley, beans and peas. The area is 2,930 acres; rateable value, £2,256; the population in 1891 was 770.

National, built in 1820 by Mrs. Barrington Purvis, at a cost of about £500, & rebuilt in 1872 at a cost of £1,117, for 150 children; average attendance, 96.
