Historical Description

LAYHAM is a parish on the river Brett, 1 ½ miles south from Hadleigh terminal station on a branch of the Great Eastern railway from Bentley Junction, in the Southern division of the county, Cosford hundred, union and petty sessional division, Hadleigh county court district, rural deanery of Hadleigh, archdeaconry of Sudbury and diocese of Ely. The church of St. Andrew is a building of flint in the Decorated style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and an embattled western tower of brick, containing one bell: the east window and one other are stained, and in the nave there is a mural tablet to the Norman family, late of Netherbury Hall: the church was new roofed and the windows renewed in 1861, and in 1886 the nave was reseated and the interior refitted out of a bequest of the Rev. Henry Hunter Hughes B.D. rector 1836—84: the church has 216 sittings. The register dates from the year 1538. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £400, with 71 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of St. John’s College, Cambridge, and held since 1885 by the Rev. Henry Russell B.D. formerly fellow of that college and rural dean of Hadleigh. Holbecks, a plain residence of brick and plaster, standing in well-wooded grounds, is the property of Sir Joshua Thellusson Rowley bart. D.L., J.P. of Tendring Hall, and now occupied by Henry Lewis Dillman Engleheart esq. J.P. Overbury Hall, an ancient half-timbered house, restored and modernized in 1871, is the seat of James Fairlie Thomas Dipnall esq. J.P. Moat Hall, erected in 1844, is the property and residence of Mr. Joseph Brown, fanner. Raworth Park is the property and seat of Major Ernest Frederick Gales J.P. Layham House is the residence of the Misses Buchan, and the Hermitage of Col. Hastings D’Oyly Farrington. J. F. T. Dipnall esq. Sir Joshua T. Rowley bart. Mr. J. Brown, Robert H. Cook esq. of Hadleigh, George Partridge esq. the trustees of the late Mr. T. W. Wilson and Major Ernest Frederick Gales are the principal landowners. The soil is chiefly sandy loam; subsoil, gravel and sand. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and beans; 360 acres are meadow land. By Order of the Local Government Board which came into operation March 25, 1884, a detached part of this parish was amalgamated with Shelley in Samford union and a detached part of Shelley was added to this parish; the civil parish of Layham so formed contains 2,521 acres of land and 10 of water; rateable value, 1896, £2,694; population (1891) of civil parish, 542 and 521 in the ecclesiastical.
