Historical Description

Leiston, a village which had formerly an Abbey of Premonstratensian Canons, founded by Ranulph Glanvile, about the year 1183. The abbot, in the year 1312, obtained a charter for a market and a fair to be held here, but both of them have been long disused. This abbey being probably decayed, and seated in art inconvenient place, another was erected at some distance from it by Robert de Ufford, Earl of Suffolk, about the year 1363, and the canons removed thither. The new, as well as the old house, was dedicated to the Blessed Virgin, and endowed at the dissolution with the annual revenue of 181l. 17s. 1d. It was granted in the reign of Henry the Eighth, to Charles Brandon, Duke of Suffolk.

This abbey was consumed, by an accidental fire within 30 years of its erection; it was however rebuilt; and there are still to be seen the ruins of a chapel on the north of the village.

Pope Lucius granted this abbey the liberty to celebrate divine worship privately, in the time of general interdiction, and likewise the liberty of burying any person who should desire to be interred in their monastery, if not under sentence of excommunication; they were not obliged to pay tithes of their goods and chattels. Richard II. confirmed many of their privileges, and granted to them, that in time of a vacancy, neither he or his heirs, nor any of his officers, should seize upon their temporalities, nor should they be compelled to grant a pension to any person whatever.

This abbey, either from decay or the inconvenience of its situation, being subject to the inundations of the sea, Robert de Ufford thought proper to rebuild about the year 1363. The new as well as the old house was dedicated to the Virgin Mary. This edifice was unfortunately destroyed by fire before 1386, but was rebuilt. At the dissolution it contained only fifteen monks. The old structure, however, was not totally abandoned, as some monks continued to reside in it till the suppression. In fact, legacies appear to have been left to our Lady of the old abbey as late as 1515. Under A. D. 1331, in the chronicle kept at Butley, is the following passage, which corroborates this statement: "John Grene, relinquishing his abbacie by choice, was consecrated an Anchorite at the chapel of St. Mary, in the old monastery near the sea." Great part of the church, several subterraneous chapels, and various offices of the new monastery, are now standing, though occupied as barns and granaries. The length of the church, which was built in the form of a cross, was about fifty-six yards, and the breadth of the middle aisle seven. The exterior seems to have been formed of an intermixture of black squared flints and stones. In the walls hereabout are many bricks, different in their form from any used at present, by being much thinner in proportion to their length and breadth. A small tower near the west end, almost entirely of brick, seems to have been built about the time of Henry VII., and some of the ornaments appear to have been formed in moulds. The interior of the church is very plain; but the columns yet remaining are extremely massive. Some walls that appeared to have surrounded the grounds that belonged to this establishment remained several centuries, till they were destroyed for the sake of the materials.

On the dissolution the site of the abbey, with the greatest part of the manors, rectories, and lands belonging to them, were granted to Charles Duke of Suffolk, in whose family the patronage of this house had been for several generations; afterwards it became the property of Daniel Harvey, esq., and has since passed through several possessors, to the Right Hon. Joshua Vanneck, Lord Huntingfield, the present owner.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

LEISTON is a small town and parish, with a station on a branch of the Great Eastern railway from Saxmundham to Aldborough, 93 miles from London, 4 north-north-west from Aldborough and 4 east-by-south from Saxmundham, in the North Eastern division of the county, Blything hundred, petty sessional division and union, Framlingham county court district, rural deanery of South Dunwich, archdeaconry of Suffolk and diocese of Norwich; it is governed by an Urban District Council of 15 members, under the provisions of the “Local Government Act, 1884” (56 and 57 Vict. c. 73), formed September 25th, 1895.

The church of St. Margaret, a quarter of a mile west of the village, was rebuilt in 1853, and is a structure of flint with stone dressings in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave, transepts, north and south porches and an embattled western tower containing 8 bells, 3 of which were added in 1883 by Frank Garrett esq.: the organ was erected in 1881: there are 900 sittings. The register dates from the year 1538. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £292, in the gift of Christ's Hospital and the Haberdashers’ Company of London, alternately, and held since 1874 by the Rev. Berney Wodehouse Raven MA. of St. John’s College, Cambridge, and rural dean of South Dunwich. The mission chapel with school room at Cold Fair Green was built in 1887. Here are Wesleyan, Congregational and Free Methodist chapels, and the Society of Friends have a meeting house. Thomas Grimsby esq. of Westleton, left in 1721 a farm of 38 acres for the use of poor widows and children belonging to the parish of Leiston, which now (1900) lets for £30 yearly: the rector and churchwardens are ex-officio trustees of this benefaction; he also bequeathed £200 to be invested by the churchwardens for the purpose of distributing bread to the poor: in 1869 the sum of £100 £3 per Cent. Consols was given by the late Lord Amelius Beauclerk, the interest to be distributed annually at Christmas. There are branch banks of Messrs. Barclay and Co. Limited, and the London and Provincial Bank Limited. The Mechanics’ Institute and Library contains between 2,000 and 3,000 volumes.

Here are the extensive works of Messrs. Richard Garrett and Sons Lim. established 1778, and extending over 15 acres: they consist of various workshops, in which are the most complete arrangement of tools and mechanical appliances required in the various operations connected with the manufacture of agricultural implements, and comprising lathes, planing, drilling and boring machines, and other of the usual engineers’ tools; in addition to which is a perfect collection of wood-cutting machinery, by means of which planing, squaring, morticing and tenoning are done more expeditiously and with greater accuracy than could be attained by manual labour: steam hammers, worked in conjunction with suitable furnaces, convert the scrap iron into forgings of the best quality: the foundry, for all kinds of cast-iron work, is one of the largest in the kingdom. The result of the skill and capital here employed is, that this establishment is one of the very few where all the parts of the steam engine, combined threshing and dressing machine, steam cultivating apparatus, drill, horse-hoe, and other agricultural implements, for which the firm of R. Garrett and Sons Limited has attained a world-wide celebrity, are manufactured under direct superintendence; and so successful have they been in bringing machinery to perfection that they are annually manufacturing a very large quantity of portable and other steam engines, combined threshing machines, corn and other drills, patent horse-hoes, manure and sand distributors, in addition to the legion of other agricultural implements which it would be impossible here to enumerate. Not the least important feature in the productions of Messrs. Garrett is that of steam-boilers, a branch in which they have become equally celebrated. The boiler shops, with their immense plate-heating furnaces, punching, rolling and hydraulic flanging machines, and powerful steam riveting machines, must be seen to appreciate the magnitude of their utility. The Leiston Works are brought by a tramway into direct communication with the system of the Great Eastern railway, and thence to all the other systems in the kingdom; thus materials are received from, and machinery delivered to, the remotest parts of the kingdom without change en route. In the year 1862 a large and handsome edifice was erected by Mr. Richard Garrett, then senior partner, in the main street, a part of which the artisans of the works are permitted to use as a dining hall, the main hall being used for drill by the H company of the 1st Volunteer Battalion Suffolk Regiment, as well as for social assemblies and public entertainments, and the upper portion is permanently occupied by the Mechanics’ Institute, and includes a reading room and two large additional rooms. In 1891 Mr. Frank Garrett presented 5 acres of land, valued at £500, for athletic purposes, and with other members of his firm gave £250 towards the expenses of laying out the ground.

About a mile from the town stand the ruins of the Premonstratensian Abbey of St. Mary, founded in 1183 by R. de Glanville and colonized from Welbeck: the massive ivy-covered walls of the 14th century choir and transepts, with high windows, an octagonal tower or gloriette on the west side of the garth, and some halfclosed portions of cellars are all that now remain: at the Dissolution there were 18 canons, and revenues valued at £181; a modern farmhouse now occupies a space among the ruins. Leiston Old Abbey, the seat of the Hon. Lady Rose, is a mansion standing on an eminence with well laid out gardens and a park containing about 16 acres, well wooded and with some plantations. The Cupola is the residence of the Hon. Wm. Arcedeckne Vanneck. Lord Huntingfield, who is lord of the manor, the Hon. Lady Rose, Mrs. Ogilvie and Frank Garrett esq. M.I.C.E., J.P. of Aldringham. House, are the principal landowners.
