Historical Description
Letheringham, a village remarkable for a little priory of Black Canons, founded by Sir John Baynel, or Bovile, which was a cell to St. Peter’s at Ipswich, and its annual revenue was valued, at the dissolution, at 26l. 13s. 5d. The priory has been converted into a good mansion-house, in which is a noble gallery, adorned with several valuable pictures. The parish church, which formerly belonged to the priory, has some magnificent monuments.
The handsome old mansion was pulled down about 1770. Letheringham also contained the seat of the Wingfields. Sir Anthony, who lived in the reign of Henry VIII. and Edward VI. was captain of the guard, vice-chamberlain to the former, knight of the garter, and a member of the privy council. Henry also employed him to assist the executors of his will, for which he bequeathed him a legacy of 200l. His descendant of the same name was created a baronet in 1627. The parish church of Letheringham formerly belonged to the priory, and the chancel contained some elegant monuments to the memory of the Boviles, the Wingfields, and the Nauntons: among which was a splendid one for Sir Robert Naunton and his lady, and another for Sir Anthony Wingfield, whose epitaph was referred to, in order to decide a contest for the office of great chamberlain of England; these have been defaced and destroyed. Mr. Gough observes, that mere neglect and exposure to the weather could not have reduced them to that state in which they appeared in 1780. In 1768, and perhaps later, they were in as good, though not in so clean a condition as they deserved: "Perhaps, "he adds, "it was for the interest of some of the parties who lately disputed the estate, to destroy every record preserved in this place; but how the dilapidation came to be permitted by the higher ecclesiastical powers, is a question not readily resolved."
LETHERINGHAM is a parish and village on the river Deben, 3 miles south-west from Parham station on the Framlingham branch, and 4 ½ from Wickham Market junction station on the Ipswich and Lowestoft section of the Great Eastern railway, 4 south from Framlingham, 3 north-west from Wickham Market and 7 north from Woodbridge, in the North Eastern division of the county, Loes hundred, Plomesgate union, Framlingham petty sessional division, Framlingham and Saxmundham county court district, rural deanery of Loes, archdeaconry of Suffolk and diocese of Norwich. The church of St. Mary, comprising in part the church of the Austin priory, is an ancient building of flint in the Decorated style, consisting of nave, south porch and an embattled western tower with pinnacles containing one bell: the tower is a fine specimen of flint work: the chancel was entirely removed about 1750: there are 220 sittings. The register dates from the year 1588. The living is a vicarage, consolidated with that of Hoo, joint net yearly value £100, including 60 acres of glebe with residence, in the gift of the Church Patronage Society. Here was formerly a priory of Augustinian or Black Canons, founded by Sir J. Boyville of Bovile as a cell to St. Peter’s Priory, Ipswich, and valued at the Dissolution at £26 18s. 5d.; the domestic buildings, of which there are now no remains, stood on the north side of the church: the site is now a stack yard. The house called The Abbey, and now a farm residence, was formerly the seat of the Naunton family and is the property of the trustees of the late Duke of Hamilton K.T. (d. 1895), who are lords of the manor and own the whole of the parish with the exception of four cottages. The soil is mixed; subsoil, clay and sand. The chief crops are wheat, roots, barley and hay. The area is 1,144 acres of land and 9 of water; rateable value, £935; the population in 1891 was 207.
The school here is temporarily closed & the children attend the schools in the adjoining parishes.
