Historical Description
LITTLE CORNARD is a parish and; village, on the high ground overlooking the valley of the Stour on the borders of Essex, 2 ½ miles south-south-east from Sudbury station, in the Southern division of the county, Babergh hundred, Melford petty sessional division, Sudbury union and county court district, rural deanery and archdeaconry of Sudbury and diocese of Ely. The church of All Saints is an ancient building of stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and an embattled western tower with spire containing 5 bells: the chancel retains a piscina: the font, a curious work of the early 14th, century, bears the arms of the De Cornard, De Vere, Ufford & De Burgh families: there are three stained windows: the church affords 320 sittings, 300 being unappropriated. The register dates from the year 1565. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £298, including 50 acres of glebe, awarded in 1842, in the alternate gift of the Bishop of Norwich and the present rector, and held since 1872 by the Rev. John Cole Ambrose MA. of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge. Crossman's charity, for Sunday school teachers, consists of the interest of £100 invested in the public funds: Thomas Stephens, in 1664, left a sum of twenty shillings to be divided yearly between five poor persons and six shillings and eight pence to the rector: there is also a sum of £5 annually arising from 5 acres church land for the repairs of the church and the interest of £300, given by George Mumford esq. for providing coals for the poor: the trustees of this charity are the rector and the churchwardens for the time being. In this parish are localities known as “Killingdown Hill,” “Sharpfight Meadow” and “Danes Hole,’’ supposed to be the sites of engagements with the Danes. William Prigg esq. of Great Cornard, is lord of the manor. The principal landowners are Lord Walsingham, C. Taylor, A. H. A. Mumford, Thomas Fitch, Charles Crooks and Edward Herbert Sikes esqrs. The soil is generally loam; subsoil, chalk. In the neighbourhood are chalk pits, with gravel and brick earth. The chief crops are wheat, peas, barley, oats, beans and turnips. The area is 1,740 acres of land and 8 of water; rateable value, £1,858; the population in 1891 was 329.
