Historical Description

LOUND is a parish and village, 2 ½ miles north-east from Somerleyton station on the Norwich and Lowestoft section of the Great Eastern railway, 6 ½ south-by-west from Yarmouth and 5 north-west from Lowestoft, in the Northern division of the county, union, petty sessional division and hundred of Mutford and Lothingland, Lowestoft county court district, rural deanery of Lothingland, archdeaconry of Suffolk and diocese of Norwich. The church of St. John the Baptist is an ancient structure of flint in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and a round western tower containing 3 bells: the east window is Early Perpendicular: the church was thoroughly repaired and new roofed in 1856: in 1875 the chancel was restored by the rector: and in 1893 the nave was restored and ire-seated, at the cost of £405 subscription and an additional half acre added to the churchyard by Sir Savile B. Crossley bart.: there are 200 sittings. The register dates from the year 1695. The living is a rectory, net income £300, with 23 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of trustees, and held since 1868 by the Ven. Richard Hudson Gibson MA. of Trinity College, Cambridge, archdeacon of Suffolk, hon. canon of Norwich, and domestic chaplain to Lord Thurlow. The Methodist New Connexion have a place of worship here. The allotment lands are let for £17 yearly, which sum is expended in coals for the poor. The trustees of the late Richard Henry Reeve esq. of Lowestoft, are lords of the manor. Sir Savile Brinton Crossley bart. of Somerleyton, and Russell James Colman esq. D.L., J.P. of The Cliffe, Corton, are the principal landowners. The soil is good mixed land; subsoil, clay and gravel. The chief crops are wheat, beans, barley, oats, hay and turnips. The area is 1,258 acres of land and 5 of water; rateable value, £2,634; the population in 1891 was 403.

School, built in 1857, with teacher's residence attached, for 72 children; average attendance, 67.
