Historical Description

LIDGATE (or Lydgate) is a parish and small village, on the borders of Cambridgeshire, 7 miles south-east from Newmarket station and 12 west-south-west from Bury St. Edmunds, in the Western division of the county, Risbridge hundred, Newmarket petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Thurlow, archdeaconry of Sudbury and diocese of Ely. The church of St. Mary is a building of flint and stone, in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and a square western embattled tower containing 5 bells: the chancel was partially restored and a stained window inserted in 1853: it was further restored in 1863; a rood cross and gates were added by the last rector in 1871 and a further restoration was undertaken in 1895 at a cost of £400: in the chancel is a brass figure of John of Lydgate, the head of which has been restored by the rector: there are 200 sittings. The register dates from the year 1547. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £215, with residence and 55 acres of glebe, in the gift of Mrs. Wilson, and held since 1889 by the Rev. Ernest Awdry Gray, of Trinity College, Dublin. Here is a Congregational chapel. Rowling's Charity, derived from 12 acres of land, is partly applied to church purposes and partly in aid of the poor. John of Lydgate, a monk of the Benedictine abbey of Bury St. Edmunds, and a celebrated poet of the earlier half of the 15th century, was born in this village, c. 1375, died c. 1415; of his numerous works the “History of Troy,” printed in 1513, and again in 1555, was the most popular. Here are the remains of an ancient castle known as King John’s. Francis Elliot Kitchener esq. of Oulton Hall, Staffs, is lord of the manor. Herbert Bulkeley Praed esq. of Owsden Hall, Newmarket, Capt. Ormerod Pilkington Baldwin, of 31 Kenilworth road, St. Leonards-on-Sea, and Godfrey W. A. Baldwin esq. are the principal landowners. The soil is day; subsoil, clay and chalk. The crops are wheat, barley, beans, peas and roots. The area is 2,032 acres; rateable value, £2,027; the population in 1891 was 390.

A School Board of 5 members was formed 28 Jan. 1876; William Clement Fuller, clerk to the board.
