Historical Description

MELLIS is a parish and village, with station on the Great Eastern railway, at which there is a junction of the Eye branch; it stands on a large green or common, and is 92 ½ miles from London and 3 ½ west from Eye, in the North Eastern division of the county, Hartismere hundred, petty sessional division and union, county court district of Eye, rural deanery of Hartismere, archdeaconry of Suffolk and diocese of Norwich. The church of St. Mary the Virgin is an ancient flint edifice in mixed styles, erected at the close of the 13th century, consisting of chancel, nave, with one bell and south porch: the tower is in ruins: the church contains memorials of the families of Yaxley and Clarke, formerly residents here: it has six Perpendicular windows in the nave and one in the chancel: between the chancel and nave is a fine screen: the interior was restored in 1859: at the west end is a fine octagonal font, over which are the royal arms of Charles I. A.D. 1634, in excellent preservation: there are 234 sittings. The register dates from the year 1559. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £250, including 10 acres of glebe and modern residence, in the gift, of the Lord Chancellor, and held since 1890 by the Rev. Thomas Heaviside Peat MA, of St. Mary Hall, Oxford. Here is a Free Methodist chapel. There is an endowment of £8 yearly, which is applied for the repairs of the church. George Holt Wilson esq. of Redgrave, who is lord of the manor of St. John’s, Lord Henniker, who is lord of the manor of Pountney Hall, John Tudor Frere esq. of Roydon, Norfolk, Arthur Flatman esq. and Lady Bateman, of Broome Hall are the chief landowners. The soil is stiff and heavy; subsoil, clay. The crops are on the four-course shift. The area is 1,362 acres, inclusive of 180a. 2r. 19p. of common right; rateable value, £2,503; the population in 1891 was, 413.
