Historical Description

MELTON is a large and populous village and parish on the river Deben, with a station on the Ipswich and Lowestoft section of the Great Eastern railway, one mile north-east from Woodbridge, which parish it adjoins, in the South Eastern division of the county, Wilford hundred, Woodbridge petty sessional division, union and county court district, Wilford rural deanery, archdeaconry of Suffolk and diocese of Norwich. The village is lighted with gas, by the Woodbridge Gras Light and Coke Company Limited, and supplied with water from springs. The church of St. Andrew is a handsome building of Kentish rag, with Caen and Bath stone dressings, in the Decorated style, built by subscription, at a cost of £3,500, and opened in May, 1868: it consists of chancel, nave, north aisle, south porch and a south-western tower and spire containing 3 bells and a clock: it has an organ: the font was brought from the old church, and is a handsome piece of sculpture, illustrating the seven sacraments of the Catholic church: there are 410 sittings. The tower of the old church, with the nave, which stand at some distance from the village, are now only used as a mortuary chapel, the churchyard being still used for burials. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £250, with 8 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Ely, and held since 1888 by the Rev. Charles' Cecil Sumner B.A. of Caius College, Cambridge, who is non resident; the Rev. Henry Wm. Walsh MA. of Lincoln College, Oxford, has been curate in charge since 1899. There is a small Primitive Methodist chapel, erected in 1860. In the village is the iron foundry and agricultural machinery works of Messrs. Page and Girling: there is also a brewery and a trade in corn and coals is carried on. Here are sand and clay pits and brickfields. The fairs formerly held are now discontinued. Melton Grange is the residence of Major John Edwards Werge Howey J.P.; Melton Hall, of Mrs. Wood; The Towers, of Mrs. Hessey; Fern Hill, of Harry Filmer Sulivan esq.; Greylands, of Edward Henderson esq.; and The Cedars, of Mrs. Grimwood. The Dean and Chapter of Ely are the lords of the manor. The principal landowners are the trustees of Miss Walford, Edward Brooke esq. of Ufford, Mrs. Darling, of Eyke; Mrs. Wood, Sir Alfred B. Garrod M.D. of 10 Harley street, London W.; Wm. Page Thos. Phillips esq. of Pyrford Croft, Woking, Surrey, Mrs. Hessey and J. A. Burness esq. The soil is sandy; subsoil, gravel. The chief crops are wheat and barley. The area is 1,411 acres of land, 6 of water, 5 of tidal water and 24 of foreshore; rateable value, £9,666; the population in 1891 was 1,510, including 564. officers and patients in the asylum.

THE SUFFOLK COUNTY ASYLUM.

This institution, standing about one mile from the village, on the road to Wickham Market, is a large building of red brick; formerly a House of Industry for the Loes & Wilford Hundreds, and was purchased by the County Magistrates in 1827, & opened in 1829 fox the reception of pauper lunatics; in 1886 two wings & a water tower were added, gas mains laid throughout & a laundry built, at a cost of about £42,000. In 1890 water works were erected near the railway station, the water supply being obtained from borings, & thence conveyed in pipes to the asylum. Additional land was purchased in 1900 for the purpose of erecting new buildings to hold 280 patients in addition to the 600 already provided for; a house for the medical superintendent, & dwellings for the staff.

A School Board of 5 members was formed 12 October, 1892; E. Gammage, Cumberland street, Woodbridge, clerk to the board.
