Historical Description
MENDHAM is a parish and pleasant village on the river Waveney, 2 miles south-east from Harleston railway station, on the Waveney Valley section of the Great Eastern railway, and 8 south-west from Bungay, in the North Eastern division of the county, Hoxne hundred, union and petty sessional division of Hoxne, county court district of Harleston, rural deanery of Hoxne, archdeaconry of Suffolk and diocese of Norwich. In 1874 an iron bridge of one arch was erected over the river Waveney, which here separates the counties of Norfolk and Suffolk. The church of All Saints is an edifice of flint with stone dressings, in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, clerestory, aisles, south porch and a square western embattled tower containing 6 bells: it contains several mural monuments and tablets, and three brasses to the Frestone family; the church was restored in 1867, at a cost of £1,800: the east window is stained, subject “The Ascension,” and was erected by the rector and friends in 1887 to the memory of Mrs. F. K. Brereton, who died January 18th, 1886: there are 300 sittings. The parish register dates from the year 1678. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £73, including 225 acres of glebe, with residence, built in 1851, in the gift of the trustees of the late E. W. Whitaker MA. sometime rector of Stanton, Derbyshire, and held since 1892 by the Rev. Wm. Hy. Harris MA. of Pembroke College, Oxford. The rectorial tithes of a large portion of the parish have been purchased by the landowners, and Sir Hugh Edward Adair bart. is impropriator of the remainder, commuted in 1836 for £325. About a mile from the church, on the Suffolk side of the river, was a priory, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, founded by William, son of Roger de Huntingfield, during the reign of King Stephen; a small portion of its ruins is still visible. Middleton Hall, now occupied as a farm house, is about one mile east, on a pleasant eminence. The Priory is the residence of Joseph Dimmock esq. The parish lies in four manors, viz. Walsham Hall, Mendham, Kings Hall, and Priory; John Sancroft Holmes esq. of Gawdy Hall, is lord of the first two, and Sir Hugh Edward Adair bart. of Flixton Hall, is lord of the two latter. The lords of the manor, with Seymour Berkeley Portman-Dalton esq. of Fillingham Castle, Lincoln, the trustees of Thomas Rant esq. of Chediston Hall, and Charles Chevallier esq. are the chief landowners. The soil is loam; subsoil, day. The chief crops are wheat, barley, peas and beans. The area of the parish is 2,894 acres of land and 11 of water; assessable value, £2,016; the population in 1891 was 590 in the civil and 711 in the ecclesiastical parish, which extends into Norfolk. By a Local Government Board Order, which came into operation March 25, 1885, a part of the parish of Withersdale was for civil purposes added to Mendham; and that portion of Mendham on the north side of the Waveney, in Norfolk, was at the same time added to Harleston.
A School Board of 5 members wag formed 4 December, 1874; Walter Cordwell, Harleston, clerk to the board.
Board School (mixed & infants), built in 1876, for 140 children; average attendance, 90.
MENDHAM, a parish formerly partly in this county, is now wholly in Suffolk.
