Historical Description

Mendlesham, situated near the rise of the river Deben; it had a market and fair granted in the reign of Edward the First. The market, which is on Tuesday, is not much frequented, because of its situation in deep miry roads; but though it is a poor dirty town, it has a handsome church. The town is situated 79 miles from London, and contained, according to the late population act, 199 houses, and 1019 inhabitants.

In the year 1758, a gold concave ring was ploughed up here; the inscription is supposed to be in the Runic or Sclavonian language; a silver crown of considerable weight was likewise found here some time since.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

MENDLESHAM is a parish and village, 3 ½ miles south-east from Finningham station of the Ipswich and Norwich section of the Great Eastern railway, 7 west-north-west from Debenham, 7 south-south-west from Eye, 7 north-east from Stowmarket, 16 north from Ipswich and 88 from London, in the North Eastern division of the county, hundred, petty sessional division and union of South Hartismere, county court district of Stowmarket, rural deanery of Hartismere, archdeaconry of Suffolk and diocese of Norwich. The church of St. Mary is a handsome stone structure, in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, north and south porches and a lofty embattled western tower with pinnacles and containing 5 bells and a clock: an organ was erected by subscription in 1849: there is a brass with knightly effigy; one window in the chancel is stained, and in the vestry is a brass plate with an inscribed list of the houses and land given in charity to the parish, and is dated 1807: the chancel was restored in 1864, and the whole church repeated in 1865; this was one of the twenty-one churches in Suffolk, Norfolk and Essex, conferred by William Rufus, in the year 1095, upon Battle Abbey: there are 479 sittings. The churchyard was enlarged in 1876 by one acre. The register dates from the year 1558. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £350, with 20 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the trustees of the Rev. Edmund Roger Manwaring White MA. and held since 1892 by the Rev. Edward Foyle Randolph B.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge. Here is a Congregational chapel, built 1848; and there is a Baptist chapel on the Green, built 1839. The Foresters’ Hall was built in 1889. Hugh Fitz-Otho procured the privilege for this place of a market and fair, but both are now obsolete. The Green lies about 2 miles from the church. The parish has a considerable amount of charity land &c. producing about £255 per annum. Robert Cake, in 1473, left certain lands, the rent and issues of which were to exonerate the parish from the tenths and fifteenths imposed on it by the King, and the remainder for the relief of the poor and repair of the church; the other charities are of a minor character. Under a scheme of the Charity Commissioners for the distribution of the proceeds of the Town and Church estates, one-half is assigned to the repair and maintenance of the fabric of the parish church, including the steeple, and the other half is generally given to the poor in clothing and coal; several acres of land belonging to the charity have been laid out as allotments. Messrs. Beaumont & Son are lords of the manor. The principal landowners are O. W. H. Holmes esq., Charles Goodrich and Charles Morrison esqrs. Miss Matthew, of Hadleigh, Suffolk; Frederick Jacob Robinson esq.; Lord De Saumarez, of Shrubland Park; the trustees of the late S. Wainwright esq. and Henry Parry esq. The soil is mixed; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley, peas and roots; the land is very fertile. The area is 3,955 acres of land and 5 of water; rateable value, £4,062; the population in 1891 was 1,138.

National Endowed School, founded in 1491; the present school was built in 1869, & since improved; it will hold 160 children; average attendance, 135.
