Historical Description

At Mettingham, a village about a mile and a half to the east by south of Bungay, was a castle, which, from its ruins, appears to have been of considerable extent and strength, though the gate-house, and some of the walls, are only left standing. This castle was first built by John de Norwich, who obtained a licence from King Edward the Third to make a castle of his house, after which it passed through several hands. In this castle was a college or chantry, founded by Sir John de Norwich, knight, vice-admiral of England, and dedicated to God and the Blessed Virgin, which, at the dissolution, had a revenue of 2202l. 7s. 5d. a year.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

METTINGHAM is a parish and scattered village, on the south bank of the Waveney and the borders of Norfolk, 2 miles east from Bungay station on the Waveney Valley section of the Great Eastern railway and 4 west from Beccles, in the Northern division of the county, Bungay petty sessional division, Wangford hundred and union, county court district of Beccles and Bungay, rural deanery of Wangford, archdeaconry of Suffolk and diocese of Norwich. The church of All Saints is an ancient building of stone in the Norman style, standing on an eminence, and consisting of chancel, nave, south aisle and south porch, with a round western embattled tower, containing 4 bells: the north doorway is a good specimen of Norman work, with very early dog-tooth moulding: there are 250 sittings, a large portion being free. The register dates from the year 1680. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value about £100, in the gift of the trustees of the late Charles F. Hope Collisson esq. and held since 1895 by the Rev. William Boyce, who is also headmaster of Bungay Grammar school, and resides in Bungay. Mrs. Charles F. Hope Collisson is impropriator of the great tithes. The town estate consists of a cottage, blacksmith’s shop and 37a. 1r. 14p. of land in Mettingham and Shipmeadow, and two cattle-goings on Stow Fen, now let for £74 5 s. 6d. yearly, which is applied in coals and payments to the sick poor, repairs of the church and expenses incidental to the service, and educational prizes for poor children. In the reign of Edward I. Sir John de Norwich was lord of the manor, and obtained from that monarch, in 1302, a grant of free warren in Mettingham, Shipmeadow and Redesham; in the 9th of Edward II. Walter de Norwich held it, and in the reign of Edward III. it was the manor of Sir John de Norwich, who built the Castle; he died in 1361: the Gate house and the picturesque ivy-clad ruins show it to have been a place of considerable extent and strength; within the ruins, most pleasantly situated, is the residence of Charles Gurdon Kemball esq. J.P. a mansion of red brick, erected in 1880. The Castle farm and out-buildings also are built on the site of the old Manor House: six silver bells were found in, the moat, near the ruins of the supposed belfry tower, about the year 1843, and were taken to Yarmouth. A college for a master and thirteen chaplains or fellows was founded here by Sir John de Norwich and dedicated to God and the blessed Virgin, the college was endowed with the Castle as a residence for the Society, together with the manors of Mettingham and others in Suffolk and Norfolk, and the fraternity here educated and maintained a number of boys: at the Dissolution their revenues were valued at £202 7s. 5 ½d. yearly. The landowners are Mrs. Tallent, the Rev. Mr. Bellwards trustees, Mrs. Charles F. Hope-Collisson, the trustees of the late William Hartcup esq. of Upland Hall, Mr. Herbert Alexander Grimmer and others. The soil is loam; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley and beans. The area is 1,380 acres of land and 12 of water; assessable value, £1,609; the population in 1891 was 325.

This place is included in the Bungay United School Board district, formed 16 April, 1875; the children attend the school at Bungay.
