Historical Description

Mildenhall, a large, populous town, situated on the river Lark, sixty-nine miles north-east by north of London. Its noble church has a tower one hundred and twenty feet high, and is a great ornament to the town, which is pleasant and well-built. Towards the fens, which to the east of this town extend to Cambridgeshire, are several large streets as big as ordinary towns, called by the inhabitants rows, as West-row, Holywell-row, and Beck-row. In the year 1567, great part of this town was consumed by fire. Here is the seat of Sir Charles Bunbury, Bart. The town has a plentiful market on Fridays, well supplied with fish, wild-fowl, and all other provisions.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

MILDENHALL is a market and union town and head of a county court district, with a terminal station on the Great Eastern railway, in the North Western division of the county, in Lackford hundred and petty sessional division, rural deanery of Mildenhall, archdeaconry of Sudbury and diocese of Ely. The parish comprises Mildenhall High Town and the watches or hamlets of Beck Row, Holywell Row and West Row. The town is pleasantly situated on the river Lark, on which there is some good fishing, and near the borders of Cambridgeshire, 22 miles north-east from Cambridge, 15 east from Ely, 9 north-by-north-east from Newmarket, 11 ½ south-west from Thetford, 12 north-by-north-west from Bury and 9 ½ south-west from Brandon; a branch line of railway from Cambridge to this place was opened for traffic 1st April, 1885; the river Lark was opened for navigation in 1891 and barges now ply hence to Ely and Lynn. The town is lighted with gas by a local company and has a good supply of excellent water. The church of St. Mary and St. Andrew is a magnificent building of stone and chinch, in mixed styles, and consists of chancel (of the Early English and Decorated periods), nave with clerestory, aisles, vestry, and an embattled western tower, 120 feet high, containing a clock and 8 bells with chimes, added as a memorial of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee of 1897: there is also an entrance through the base of the tower, which has a vaulted ceiling, with rich fan tracery, and here stands the tomb of Sir Henry de Barton, lord mayor of London in the reign of Richard II. and under whose auspices the metropolis was first lighted: in the chancel are monuments to the Bunbury family, 1736 and 1790, the Hunt and Orman families, to Elizabeth, daughter of Lord Viscount Allen; and a slab of Purbeck marble, with an incised floriated cross to Sir Richard de Wichforde, founder of the chancel, and a memorial to Hugh Hovel, dated 1690: in the vestry is a brass to Mary, daughter of Sir Robert Wingfield kt. M.P. and wife of Sir Henry Warner kt. of this place, 1601: the chancel retains piscinae and sedilia; and the east window has tracery of very curious arrangement, and in 1882 was filled with stained glass: the carved oak pulpit, with stone pedestal and steps was erected in 1875 as a memorial to James Read esq. solicitor, and for fifty-three years churchwarden; the brass reading-desk was presented in 1873, in memory of Mr. G. Singleton: in the nave is a monument to Sir T. C. Bunbury bart. for 43 years one of the representatives for the county of Suffolk in Parliament, d. 1821; two slabs with incised male figures in armour and a fine brass: in the south aisle are effigies of Sir Henry North kt. of Mildenhall, and his lady, and monuments to the Rev. Oliphant, chairman of the East India Company; James Packe; Sir C. J. F. Bunbury bart. d. 18 June, 1886, and to Mrs. Pescod: the nave has a fine open timber hammer beam roof, with carved spandrils, and figures of angels, and the roof of the south aisle displays the swan and antelope, the badges of Henry V.: the church was repewed and repaired in 1851, the tower restored in 1864, the south aisle in 1875 and a new tiled pavement placed in the chancel and sanctuary in 1884: there are sittings for 1,000 persons, 477 seats being reserved for the use of the poorer inhabitants. The register dates from the year 1559. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £614, including 327 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Sir Henry C. J. Bunbury bart. and held since 1898 by the Rev. William Henry Wood, who is also rural dean of Mildenhall. There are also Baptist, Wesleyan and Particular Baptist chapels. The Cemetery, situated on the north side of the town, is 2 acres in extent, with a mortuary chapel in the centre, was opened in 1856: Sir Charles F. Bunbury bart. gave the ground, the cost of laying out being £400, and a lodge was given by Mrs. Gatherede Button, of Birmingham, in memory of her husband. The Public Hall, built in 1886 from plans of G. Harold Elphick esq. of London, at a cost of £850, contains a large hall capable of seating 350 persons, and is fitted up with permanent stage and attiring rooms; closely adjoining these are reading and caretaker’s rooms. The Mildenhall Institute occupies a portion of the building and the armoury of the Mildenhall detachment of H Company 2nd Volunteer Battalion Suffolk Regiment, is also here: there are some good shops, hotels and inns. The market cross, of the time of Henry V. is constructed of timber, and is hexagonal in form and roofed with lead; the market day is Friday. A horticultural show is held here annually. A Cottage Hospital was established here in 1868 with eight beds, and the average number of patients during the year is 60. Here are almshouses, founded in 1722 by Sir Thomas Hanmer, for four poor widows, and several other small charities, amounting in the whole to £200 yearly. Near the station, and on the river Lark, are the old-established and extensive roller mills and maltings of Messrs. Parker Brothers Limited. The Manor House, the property of Sir Henry C. J. Bunbury bart. was built in the time of Charles I. by Sir Henry North bart.: the mansion, now (1900) occupied by the Society of the Sacred Mission, is surrounded by lofty trees, and has pleasure grounds attached: the banqueting hall is used as a girls' school. The soil is various, being of excellent quality in the district between the high town and the Rows, and in other parts sandy heather and fen; the subsoil, chalk, and in the Fen districts clay and sand. The chief crops are cereals. The area, including woods, is 16,700 acres of land, and 67 of water, this being the most extensive parish in the county; rateable value, £14,923; and the population of the entire parish in 1891 was 3,732, including 67 officers and inmates in the workhouse.
