Historical Description
MOULTON is a parish and pleasant village, formerly a market town, in a small valley on the borders of Cambridgeshire, 2 miles south from Kennet railway station on the Cambridge and Bury St. Edmunds branch of the Great Eastern railway, 3 ½ east from Newmarket and 11 west from Bury St. Edmunds, in the North Western division of the county, Risbridge hundred, Newmarket petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Thurlow, archdeaconry of Sudbury and diocese of Ely. A watercourse runs through the village, over which there are several footbridges. The church of St. Peter is a handsome building of flint with stone dressings in the Perpendicular style, and consists of chancel, lofty nave with handsome clerestory, aisles, transepts, south porch and a western embattled tower containing 5 bells: in 1879 a clock was placed in the tower in memory of the Rev. Edwin Mortlock B.D. a former rector: there is an organ, erected at a cost of £255: the body of the church is fitted with substantial and handsome open oak benches: there is also a very perfect rood staircase: a portion of the centre upper light of the large east window is filled with stained glass, in memory of Mr. W. Hathaway: the church was thoroughly restored in 1850—1, at an expense of £2,000, defrayed principally by the late rector: there are 450 sittings, 350 being free. The register dates from the year 1560. The living is a rectory and vicarage, net yearly value £500, with residence and 15 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Master and Fellows of Christ’s College, Cambridge, and held since 1873 by the Rev. William James Josling MA. and formerly fellow and tutor of that college. Here is a Wesleyan chapel. There are several charities belonging to this parish: two allotments of land, lying in the parishes of Moulton and Freckenham, called the town estate, yearly value about £15, for the repair of the church and bridges; also fuel land, of 45 ½ acres, yearly value about £40, which is expended in coals: Deynes' charity (Cowlinge parish), of £30 gross yearly value, is equally distributed in coals amongst all the poor inhabitants of the parishes of Barrow, Cowlinge, Hargrave and Moulton; the Herring money, yearly value 7s. 6d. from the estate of E. Hammond esq. and the interest of Worthington’s gift, amounting to 2s. 3d. yearly, are distributed in coals to widows. Moulton Paddocks, the racing seat of Sir Ernest Cassel K.C.M.G. is about 2 miles north-west from the church. Col. H. L. B. McCalmont M.P. of Cheveley Park, Newmarket, who is lord of the manor, Sir Ernest Cassel, Trinity Hall, Cambridge, Edward Hammond esq. and Prince Soltykoff are the chief landowners. The soil is principally of a sandy nature; subsoil, gravel and chalk. The whole of this parish is in a high state of cultivation; the crops are wheat, barley, turnips and clover. The area is 3,169 acres; rateable value, £3,974; the population in 1891 was 509.
