Historical Description

MUTFORD is a parish and village, 5 miles south-east from Beccles station on the Great Eastern railway, and 5 ½ south-west from Lowestoft, giving its name to the hundred, in the Northern division of the county, Mutford and Lothingland petty sessional division, Lowestoft county court district, and in the rural deanery of Lothingland, archdeaconry of Suffolk and diocese of Norwich. Mutford also gives name to the union (for particulars of which see Lowestoft). The church of St. Andrew is a structure of flint, consisting of lofty Decorated chancel, Perpendicular nave and south porch and a circular embattled western tower, with octagonal belfry storey and containing 3 bells: the south porch was built in 1891 and there are remains of a western porch: the church affords 200 sittings. The register dates from the year 1554. The living is a vicarage, consolidated with that of Barnby, joint net yearly value £213, with 30 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Master and Fellows of Caius College, Cambridge, and held since 1893 by the Rev. John James Dyson MA. formerly scholar of that college, who resides at Barnby. Here is a small Wesleyan chapel. Here is an allotment of 15 acres of land, which is let for about £27 yearly, laid out in coal, which is distributed to the poor in winter; there is also the sum of 10s. a year payable to the poor of the parish out of the estate of William Andrew esq. The trustees of the late Richard Henry Reeve esq. of Lowestoft, are lords of the manor; and the Rev. William Hale Andrews MA. of Carlton Colville, near Lowestoft, Messrs. Frederic W. D. Robinson, of Roos Hall, Thomas Pead Gooda and Mrs. Hay are the chief landowners. The soil is mixed, light and heavy; subsoil, sand and clay. The chief crops are roots, barley, beans, peas and wheat. The area is 1,597 acres; rateable value, £1,681; the population in 1891 was 420.
