Historical Description

Nacton, where the family of Fastolf were patrons and probably lords of this place, from the year 1380, till the manor and estate came to the Brokes by marriage. This family is descended from Sir Richard Broke, lord chief justice of the Common Pleas in Queen Mary’s reign, descended from a Cheshire family. Sir Richard built Cow-hall, about the year 1526. Robert Broke, of Nacton, was created a baronet in 1661; but the patent being made in the ordinary way, and he dying without issue male, his brother’s son could not succeed to the title, though he enjoyed the estate in consequence of his marriage with Sir Robert’s daughter arid heiress. This estate is now, by descent, the residence of Sir Philip Bowes Vere Broke, captain of his Majesty’s frigate the Shannon, who so bravely distinguished himself by the capture of the American frigate Chesapeake, on the 1st of June, 1813, off the harbour of Boston. The other manor here, besides that of Cow-hall, is called St. Peter in Nacton and Kembroke. The tenement of Hamon’s, in Nacton, was granted, as part of the possessions of St. Peter’s priory in Ipswich, to Thomas Alverde.

The celebrated Admiral Vernon was partial to this parish as his residence. His nephew, to whom he left the bulk of his fortune, after the admiral's death, rebuilt the house, and inclosed it within Orwell-park. He was afterwards advanced to the peerage, as the Right Hon. Lord Orwell and Earl of Shipbrooke. A short time ago an exchange took place between John Vernon, esq., the heir of Lord Shipbrooke, arid his brother-in-law, Sir Robert Harland, by which Orwell- park is now the seat of the latter.

At Nacton, is the house of industry for the incorporated hundreds of Carlford and Colneis, erected in 1757, at the expence of 4800l.

Where the road from Nacton to Bucklesham crosses the other leading from Ipswich to Trimley, is the spot called the Seven Hills, though there are more which appear to have been barrows; consequently this, and not Rushmere, has with more, probability been deemed the place where Earl Ulfketel had the terrible conflict with the Danes.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

NACTON is a parish and village pleasantly seated on the north bank of the navigable river Orwell, having a station on the Felixstowe branch of the Great Eastern railway (called Orwell station), 4 miles south-east from Ipswich and 8 south-west from Woodbridge, in the South Eastern division of the county, Colneis hundred, Woodbridge petty sessional division and union, Ipswich county court district, rural deanery of Colneis, archdeaconry of Suffolk and diocese of Norwich. The church of St. Martin is a rubble building in the Decorated style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisle and south porch with western embattled tower containing 2 bells: it contains a fine heraldic window recording the inter-marriages of the Broke family: here are 250 sittings, half being free. The register dates from the year 1562. The living is a rectory, consolidated with Levington, net yearly value £300, with 22 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of Capt. E. G. Pretyman M.P. and held since 1894 by the Rev. Arthur Hawtrey Watson MA. of Keble College, Oxford. Here is a Congregational chapel. The Woodbridge union house, situated here, is now (1900) closed, and the inmates transferred to the Ipswich union; near it are several tumuli or barrows, called the “Seven Hills,” and supposed to mark the site of a battle with the Danes in 1010: human bones have frequently been found here: there are several crag pits. Broke Hall, the property of Lady De Saumarez, is a noble mansion, with beautiful pleasure grounds extending to the Orwell. Orwell Park is the seat of Capt. Ernest George Pretyman M.P., D.L., J.P. the mansion, a fine brick building, standing in a park of 200 acres, on the bank of the Orwell, was greatly enlarged in 1873 by Col. G. Tomline, the late owner, and an excellent and well-furnished observatory has been attached to it; the position of this building is in north lat. 50° 0' 33" and east long. 40° 55' 8"; about 50 feet from the house, in the S.E. direction, is a tower with chimes of sixteen bells, restored in 1886. Nacton was the seat of the Fastolfs and afterwards of the Brokes. Lady De Saumarez is lady of the manor and one of the principal landowners of the parish; Capt. E. G. Pretyman M.P. also owns a large portion of the land. The soil is of a light sandy nature; subsoil, sand and crag. The crops are wheat and barley. The area is 1,912 acres of land and 152 of tidal water and 449 of foreshore; rateable value, £2,813; and the population in 1891 was 419, exclusive of 93 inmates and 6 officers in the Woodbridge union house.

Purdis Farm and Alnesbourn Priory, formerly extra-parochial, are now parishes. The area of Alnesbourn Priory is 923 acres of land, 66 of tidal water and 240 of foreshore; rateable value is £463. Area of Purdis Farm, 595 acres; rateable value £331.

National School (mixed), erected in 1820 & enlarged in 1884, for 200 children; average attendance, 150.
