Historical Description
Neyland, a market-town, situated in a vale on the north side of the river Stour, over which is a large brick bridge of one arch. In the centre of the town is a large and handsome church; which has a nave, and two aisles, and a good steeple, with a spire. It was new pewed in the year 1789, and an excellent organt erected about the same time: here are many marble monuments of clothiers, interred in former ages, that are richly inlaid with brass. The woollen manufacture has however been long on the decline, and only some; yarn made for the manufacture of crape and bombazeen at Norwich.
Neyland is an appendage to Stoke (justa Neyland), the mother church, being only a chapel of ease to it, though it; contains many more houses than Stoke.
The market-day is on Friday; but it is not much attended. The town is situated fifty-seven miles from London, and contained, according to the late population act, 154 houses and 881 inhabitants, viz. 410 males and 471 females.
From the high grounds in the neighbourhood of this town, Stoke, &c. a prospect is commanded to Harwich harbour, upwards of twenty miles; and many beautiful views enrich its vicinity.
There are a number of acres of good meadow-land in this parish, where the tenants of particular houses have a right to feed a certain number of cows, &c. from May-day to October 10. There is also a quantity of land in the neighbourhood that lets for about 130l. per annum, which is vested in trustees, for the purpose of relieving poor decayed tradespeople; and out of which rental, a salary is allowed to an English master to teach ten boys.
NAYLAND-WITH-WISSINGTON, united in 1884 for civil purposes under the Divided Parishes Act, is a parish and small town on the borders of Essex, from which it is separated by the navigable Stour, crossed here by a brick bridge; it is 5 miles east from Bures station on the Colchester and Bury section of the Great Eastern railway, 6 from Colchester, 10 south-east from Sudbury and 55 from London by road and 56 by rail, via Colchester, in the Southern division of the county, Babergh hundred, Boxford petty sessional division, Sudbury union, county court district of Colchester, rural deanery of Hadleigh, archdeaconry of Sudbury and diocese of Ely. The register dates from the year 1558. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £170, including 48 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Sir Joshua Thellusson Rowley bart. and held since 1879 by the Rev. John Durbin Gray MA. of Clare College, Cambridge. A vicarage house was erected in 1887, at a cost of over £2,000, moneys for which purpose were left by the late Samuel Alston esq.; the site of an acre and a half being given by the late Sir C. Rowley bart.; half an acre for a cemetery has been given by Miss Alston. There is a Congregational chapel, first built in 1864, and re-erected in 1,873. A fair is held here yearly, the first Wednesday after the 2nd of October. Here are extensive maltings and a brewery belonging to Messrs. T. and R. Cuddon. Extensive silk works were formerly carried on here. A trade in corn, coals, bricks and timber is carried on by means of the river, in which there is good fishing. The charities are of considerable yearly value-£190 for charitable uses and for school, and £5 for bread given on Shrove Tuesday and November 5th to the poor, and 16 tenements for poor people, rent free. Sir Joshua Thellusson Rowley bart. of Tendring Hall, is lord of the manor and principal landowner. The soil is alluvial; subsoil, gravel. The chief crops are wheat, barley and beans.
