Historical Description
NEWTON (near Sudbury) is a parish and scattered village pleasantly situated surrounding a green of about 45 acres, on which the parishioners are allowed to turn cattle; it is 3 ¼ miles east from Sudbury station on the Great Eastern line from Bury to Colchester, in the Southern division of the county, Babergh hundred, Boxford petty sessional division, Sudbury union and county court district, and in the rural deanery and archdeaconry of Sudbury and diocese of Ely. The church of All Saints is an ancient building of flint, principally in the Decorated style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and a tower containing 5 bells, recast and presented in, 1873 by Mrs. Constance Blair, in memory of her husband, Richard Blair: on the north side of the nave is an Early Norman arch, with double zigzag moulding, formerly a doorway, but now a window to the baptistery opposite the south entrance: the pulpit is of carved oak: the chancel retains a piscina, and there is an ancient monument with, shields of arms to a lady of the Carbonel family, who married one of the Botelers or Butlers; another ancient monument of a lady, dug up under the floor of the nave, is supposed to represent the foundress. The register dates from the year 1558. The living is a rectory, average net yearly value £370, with 51 acres of glebe, value £26, and residence, in the gift of the Master and fellows of St. Peter’s College, Cambridge, and held since 1892 by the Rev. Alfred Theodore Wren MA. of that College. Here is a chapel for Primitive Methodists. There are the following charities for the poor with the names of the respective donors: William Alston, 1564, 10s.; Edward Alston., 1591, 10s.; John and Robert Plampin, 1822, 16s. 8d. The parish is in the manors of Newton Hall and Botelers. Earl Howe G.C.V.O., C.B. who is lord of the former, and the trustees of the late Rev. T. L. N. Causton of the latter, Col. the Hon. Henry William Lowry-Cony, of Edwardstone Hall, and Thomas Fitch esq. are the principal landowners. The soil is good loam; subsoil, loam. The chief crops are wheat, barley and beans. The areal is 2,196 acres; rateable value, £1,840; the population in 1891 was 421 in the civil and 427 in the ecclesiastical parish.
