Historical Description

NORTON is a parish, 3 ½ miles north-east from Elmswell station on the Bury and Haughley branch of the Great Eastern railway, and 7 ½ east-north-east from Bury St. Edmunds, in the North Western division of the county, Blackbourn hundred and petty sessional division, Stow union, Bury St. Edmunds county court district, rural deanery of Thedwastre, archdeaconry of Sudbury and diocese of Ely. The church of St. Andrew is an ancient edifice in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch, vestry and an embattled western tower containing 5 bells, two of which are broken; two bear date 1628 and 1635 respectively, and the fifth is dated 1674: there are six miserere stalls in the chancel and two in the sacrarium: the aisles are almost entirely seated with ancient oak benches, some of which are finely carved with poppy heads and figures: the font is octagonal of the 14th century, well carved: in the north wall of the nave is a holy water stoup: some of the windows are filled with ancient stained glass; there are several blank matrices of ancient brasses: the chancel was repaired and reseated in 1881 and a new organ was erected in 1882: in 1897 the roof of oak over the nave was constructed, also the chancel and porch and the roofs of the aisles were renovated internally: a piscina was discovered in the south aisle during these alterations: there are 400 sittings, of which 234 are free. The register dates from the year 1539. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £340, with 21 acres Of glebe and residence, in the gift of St. Peter’s College, Cambridge, and held since 1884 by the Rev. Horatio Nelson Grimley MA. and formerly scholar of that college. A Baptist Chapel was erected by Mr. S. Hustler in 1834 at a, cost of £700. The town estate comprises four cottages and 13 acres of land: in 1650 John Fiske, pursuant to the will of his father, settled acres of land in Ixworth in trust, the rents to be distributed in weekly doles of bread to the poor of Norton: in 1773 William Staniforth gave £600 in Consuls to provide 12 poor men with, coats and 12 poor women with gowns; the dividends were not received from 1796 to 1820, in which year the arrears and original stock were laid out in the purchase of £724 8s. £3 per Cent. Reduced Annuities. Little Haugh, the property of Mrs. Peter Huddleston, at present occupied by Reginald Gurney esq. is a handsome residence, standing in a small but well wooded park and surrounded by pleasure grounds, through which the Thet flows. Mrs. Peter Huddleston, who is lady of the manor, Arthur Maitland Wilson esq. of Stowlangtoft Hall, and the trustees of the late James Sparke esq. are the principal landowners. The soil is mixed; subsoil, gravel. The chief crops are barley, wheat and turnips. The area is 2,454 acres of land and 6 of water; assessable value, £2,421; the population in 1891 was 762.
