Historical Description

OLD NEWTON is a parish and village, 1 mile east from Haughley Junction station on the Great Eastern railway and 3 miles north from Stowmarket, in the North Western division of the county, Stowmarket petty sessional division, Stow hundred and union, county court district of Stowmarket, rural deanery of Stow, archdeaconry of Suffolk and diocese of Norwich. The church of St. Mary is an ancient flint structure, in the Late Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, vestry, nave, south porch and square western embattled tower containing 5 bells, rehung and one re-cast in 1899, at a cost of £178: in 1893 the nave was refloored, the interior reseated, the organ rebuilt and other improvements made, at a cost of £216: the church was reseated in 1899, at a cost of £92: there are 300 sittings. The register dates from the year 1653. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £118, with 12 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Church Patronage Society, and held since 1890 by the Rev. Edward George Falconer, of St. Aidan's, who is also incumbent of Gipping. The rectorial tithes, commuted for £477 yearly, are in the possession of Messrs. Tacon Brothers. A mission room was erected in 1899 at a cost of £78, and there is a Primitive Methodist chapel. The town lands, between 4 and 5 acres, are now let at £6 10s. yearly, which is distributed in coals to the poor. Dagworth Hall is now a farm house. Here are three manors: Captain Ernest George Pretyman M.P. of Orwell Park, is lord of the manor of Old Newton; is lord of the manor of Nether Hall; and George Gudgeon esq. is lord of the manor of Dagworth-with-Sorrels. Edmund Baker esq. William Biddell esq. of Lavenham Hall, the trustees of the late Thomas Woodward esq. the trustees of the late W. Lankester esq. Chas. Goodrich esq. of Palgrave, the trustees of the late W. Stearn esq. Hector John Gurdon-Rebow esq. of Wyvenhoe, and Mr. A. B. Newson are the principal landowners; there are other smaller owners. The soil is heavy clay; subsoil, the same. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and a few hops. The parish is very straggling, and contains 2,372 acres; assessable value, £3,080; the population in 1891 was 672.

Dagworth hamlet, 1 ½ miles south-west, is principally in this parish, but a portion is in Haughley parish.

National School (mixed), enlarged in 1870, for about 130 children; average attendance, 112.
