Historical Description

ONEHOUSE is a parish of scattered houses 2 miles west from Stowmarket station on the Great Eastern railway, in the North Western division of the county, Stow hundred and union, petty sessional division and county court district of Stowmarket, rural deanery of Stow, Suffolk archdeaconry and Norwich diocese. The church of St. John the Baptist is a small and plain building of flint and brick, in the Middle Pointed style, and built in the 14th century; it consists of chancel, nave, south porch and a round embattled western tower, in which are 2 bells: the chancel windows are stained: there is an ancient stone font: the interior of the church was restored in 1887 under the direction of Mr. Herbert J. Green A.R.I.BA, architect, of Norwich: there are 90 sittings. The register dates from the year 1552. The living is a rectory, united in 1892 to the rectory of Harleston, joint net yearly value £285, with 45 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of R. J. Pettiward esq. and held since 1890 by the Rev. Reginald Austin Oram MA., of Caius College, Cambridge. Stow Union Workhouse, formerly the property of the old Stow hundred, from which body it was purchased in 1898 by the guardians of the Stow hundred, is in this parish: it is a building of red brick, occupying an elevated position between this village and Stowmarket and was built in 1778: it will hold 254 inmates. The principal landowners are Robert John Pettiward esq. of Finborough Hall, who is lord of the manor, and the trustees of the late Capt. John Garnham. The soil of a mixed kind, clay and loam; subsoil, heavy. The chief crops are wheat, barley and pasture. The area is 926 acres; rateable value, £722; the population in 1891 was 318, including 85 officers and inmates of the union.

Parochial School (infants), Mrs. Amelia Abbott, mistress; the children principally attend Great Finborough.

A new school, for 90 children, is now (1900) in course of erection.
