Historical Description

Pakefield, a village bounded on the east by the German Ocean, which by frequent dashings against the bases of the cliffs, has often received large portions of ponderous masses, together with the buildings they supported, into its voracious bosom. The trade consists only in a very small part of the herring fishery. There is a meeting here for the people called Quakers, who have held a meeting here for about 150 years.

In a barrow on Bloodmore-hill, near Pakefield, was found, in the year 1758, a skeleton, round whose neck hung a gold medal, with an onyx set in gold. The legend round the middle was d. n. t. avitvs. av. a rode head helmeted, a cross On the shoulder. Reverse, victoria avggg; exergue conob, a rude figure of Victory. On the onyx a man standing by a horse, whose rein he holds with a hasta pura in his right hand, and a star on his helmet. Avitus was father-in-law of Sidonius Apollinaris, set up by Theodoric, king of the Goths, defeated and deposed by Recimer, A. D. 455, after a reign of fourteen months, made bishop of Placentia, and died shortly after.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

PAKEFIELD is a parish on the sea-coast, joining Kirkley in the main street, forming a joint village, 1 ½ miles south-west from Lowestoft, 12 south from Yarmouth and 9 east from Beccles, in the Northern division of the county, Mutford and Lothingland union, petty sessional division and hundred, Lowestoft county court district, rural deanery of Lothingland, archdeaconry of Suffolk and diocese of Norwich. The church, originally divided in the centre and forming two churches, one named All Saints and the other St. Margaret, is an ancient building of flint, with thatched roof, south porch and a square embattled tower containing 5 bells: the interior has two naves and an elevated chancel, beneath which is a crypt: there are two piscinae and brasses to the memory of the Bowf, Folcard and Manners-Sutton families, and a tablet to Mrs. Cunningham: the following are copies of inscriptions in Anglo-Saxon characters on the brass of John Bowf, his wife and eleven children, in the northern mediety of the church:—

“Al shul we hen (i.e. hence)

Whider ne when,

May no man ken

But God above.

For othfer we car (i.e. For other things we shall care),

Hen schul we far (i.e. Hence shall we fare),

Ful pore and bar (i.e. Full poor and bare),

Thus seyd John Bowf.”

In the southern mediety of the church is a brass with effigy and inscription in Latin to Richard Folkhard, formerly rector of this mediety, d. on St. Martin’s day, Nov. 11, 1451; issuing from the mouth of the figure is a scroll with the text:-“I will sing of the mercies of the Lord for ever.” The church was reseated and an organ presented through the exertions of the Rev. John Edwin Sandys MA. curate here 1863—5, and the roof was repaired in 1866: there are 500 sittings. The register dates from the year 1680. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £143, with residence in the adjoining parish of Kirkley, and 15 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Church Patronage Society, and held since 1871 by the Rev. Lewis Price of St. David’s College, Lampeter. The Society of Friends have a meeting house here. Here are two charities and some allotments of land to the poor, which let for £10 yearly, which is distributed in coals annually. The National Society has a lifeboat here, and a substantial lifeboat house was built in 1892 by the Institution, at a cost of £900. The sea has made considerable encroachments on this coast, which is regarded as very dangerous for mariners. Off Pakefield are the Lowestoft South roads. A temporary lighthouse has been erected here until a permanent one can be built on the cliffs, as the sand is continually shifting. Pakefield Hall is now a farm house. The trustees of the late Richard Henry Reeve esq. of Lowestoft, are lords of the manor and chief landowners. The soil is light loam; subsoil, sand. The chief crops are wheat and barley. The area is 687 acres of land and 21 of foreshore; rateable value, £3,370; and the population in 1891 was 1,010.

National School, erected during the incumbency of the Rev. W. W. Woodhouse, in 1866, at a cost of £900, & are styled the Pakefield Cunningham schools, in memory of the late Rev. Francis Cunningham, rector of this parish for over 40 years; the school will hold 303 children; average attendance, 300. The school rooms are often used for missionary & other religious meetings.
