Historical Description

PAKENHAM is a parish 1 ½ miles north from Thurston station on the Bury and Haughley branch of the Great Eastern railway, and 5 north-east from Bury St. Edmunds, in the North Western division of the county, Thedwestry hundred, Blackbourn petty sessional division, Thingoe union, county court district of Bury St. Edmunds, rural deanery of Thedwastre, archdeaconry of Sudbury and diocese of Ely. The church of St. Mary, standing on an eminence, is a handsome cruciform building of flint, in mixed styles; the chancel arch and west and south doorways being Norman, the nave and chancel Early English, the tower and transepts Decorated, and the east and west windows Perpendicular: the church consists of chancel, nave, transepts, north porch and a central octagonal embattled tower, containing 5 bells: the handsome reredos of Caen stone and mosaics is a memorial to a former vicar and his wife: the nave is divided from the chancel by a carved oak screen: in the south wall of the sacrarium is a piscina: there are memorial windows to Thomas Compton Thornhill, Hannah, daughter of John Harrison esq. Emily and Helen, daughters of the late E. Greene esq. M.P. and I. E. Mylne esq.: the font is octagonal, in the Perpendicular style, and richly carved: there are numerous memorials and mural tablets to the Spring, Hollingworth, Symonds and Discipline families: the chancel has been new roofed by F. W. King esq.: there are 452 sittings. The register dates from the year 1563, and the portion from 1563 to 1763 has been printed. The living is a vicarage, average tithe rent-charge £186, net yearly value £28, with 71 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of and held since 1861 by the Rev. Charles William Jones MA. of Caius College, Cambridge. The tithes were commuted in 1841 for £908 2s. the impropriate tithe being £643 2s. the greater portion of which belongs to F. W. King esq. who is lay impropriator of the rectory. The Mission room was erected in 1888, and the Primitive Methodist chapel in the Mill road in 1846. The Town Estate produces about £50 yearly, which sum is divided into three equal parts, for the maintenance of the church, the purposes of education, and the selling of coals and blankets to the poor at a cheap rate; the Horringer Estate yields about £12 yearly, which is divided among ten poor persons of Pakenham and ten of Ixworth; Bright’s Charity of £1 10s. 8d. yearly is given to the poor in clothing at Christmas; and Stutter’s charity, £1 10s. is added to the third portion of the Town Estate Charity; there is also the poor’s firing about £10: all these are now administered under a scheme of the Charity Commissioners. There is a free reading and coffee room, supported by Sir E. Walter Greene, who in 1891 sunk a well and presented a pump for the use of the public. In 1764 a fine tesselated pavement was found on Bed Castle farm. Nether Hall, the seat of Sir E. Walter Greene bart. J.P. is a mansion of brick in the Queen Anne style, standing in a noble and well-wooded park, with pleasure grounds attached: the house was restored and enlarged in 1875, and again in 1891. Pakenham Lodge, the seat of Dowager Lady Thornhill, situated at the east end of the village, is a modern building of white brick and flint. Newe House is a fine old gabled mansion of brick erected in 1660—2 by Robert Bright, of Netherhall, and now the residence of Major-General Horace Percival R.A., J.P. Barton Mere, the residence of the Rev. Harry Jones MA. is an old mansion, constructed partly of brick: it takes its name from the Mere, a piece of water of about 10 acres, which lies in the grounds surrounding it: the house formerly belonged to a branch of the family of L'Estrange: it was bought in 1728 by Captain Curwen, from whom the present owner inherits it. Sir E. Walter Greene bart. and Arthur Maitland Wilson esq. of Stowlangtoft Hall, who are lords of the manors, the Rev. Preb. Harry Jones MA. George Appleyard esq. of Browster, and A. Tompkins esq. are the principal landowners. The soil is mixed; subsoil, clay and chalk. The chief crops are wheat, barley and roots. The area is 3,695 acres of land and 16 of water; rateable value, £2,786; the population in 1891 was 945.

National School (mixed), built 1842, with a house for the master, since which it has been considerably enlarged for 180 children; average attendance, 130.
