Historical Description

PALGRAVE is a parish and pleasant village on the borders of Norfolk, on an acclivity 1 mile south from Diss station on the main line of the Great Eastern railway and 4 ½ miles north-west from Eye, in the North Eastern division of the county, Hartismere hundred, petty sessional division and union, county court district of Eye. rural deanery of North Hartismere, archdeaconry of Suffolk and diocese of Norwich. The church of St. Peter is an ancient structure of flint and stone, in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel and nave (both of which contain some handsome stained windows), north and south porches, the latter, which is handsome, formerly had a chamber above, but the flooring has been removed to give more height to the porch, which contains a memorial to Thomas Martin esq. the antiquarian: there is an embattled western tower, containing a clock and peal of 6 bells, dated 1737: there are several monuments to the Harrison family: the church was restored and enlarged by the addition of a north aisle, under the auspices of the Rev. Charles Martyn, a former rector: the roof over the nave retains its ancient colouring, and is a good example of a single hammer-beam roof: there is an organ: the font is Norman:' the south porch has been restored at the expense of the Rev. Charles J. Martyn MA. rector of Daglingworth, and curate here 1859—64: there are 250 sittings. The register dates from the year 1560. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £274, with 4 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of Lady Bateman, and held since 1879 by the Rev. Ernest Lloyd Savory, of St. Mary Hall, Oxford. Martyn’s charity consists of £1,100, invested in stock, and is for a school, coals and clothing for the poor. There is also a farm, formerly producing about £65 yearly for church expenses, but now (1900) only £25. Near the village is St. John’s, the residence of Charles J. Goodrich esq. a mansion with a small park and shrubberies. Lady Bateman, of Broome Hall, is lady of the manor. The principal landowners are Charles J. Goodrich esq. and the trustees of the late John Hayward esq. The soil is principally of a light, mixed character; subsoil, gravel, sand and clay. The crops are on the four-course system. The area is 1,504 acres; rateable value, £2,660; the population in 1891 was 776.

National School (mixed), with residence for the master, erected in 1853 by the Rev. Charles Martyn, then rector, & enlarged 1887 & again in 1894 for 140 children; average attendance, 130.
