Historical Description

POLSTEAD is a parish and scattered village in a picturesque valley on the river Box, 3 miles north-north-east from Nayland and 5 west-south-west from Hadleigh terminal station, on a branch of the Great Eastern railway, in the Southern division of the county, hundred of Babergh, Boxford petty sessional division, union of Cosford, county court district of Hadleigh, rural deanery of Hadleigh, archdeaconry of Sudbury and diocese of Ely. The church of St. Mary, standing within Polstead Park, is a flint structure of the 13th century, chiefly in the Early Norman style, and consists of chancel, nave, aisles, western gallery and north and south porches and an embattled western tower with stone spire, containing 6 bells: the old pews were removed in 1887 and chairs substituted: it contains monuments to the Brand, Cooke and Vincent families, dating from 1630, and two brasses; a fine Norman arch leads to the belfry: the windows were restored in 1881, and the churchyard enlarged by the gift of about half an acre from the Rev. Alexander Cooke: there are 250 sittings. The register dates from the year 1538. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £520, with residence and 17 acres of glebe, in the gift of St. John’s College, Oxford, and held since 1895 by the Rev. Francis John Eld MA. of that college. At Polstead Heath there is a Primitive Methodist chapel, and at Hadleigh Heath a Baptist chapel. Charities: the interest on £130 left by Thomas Martin and his wife in 1843, is for bread to the poor on St. Thomas’ Day, and Edward Richardson, in 1863, left £100, the interest to be distributed, one shilling to each poor family, also on St. Thomas’ Day. A fair was formerly held on Polstead green on the Wednesday after July 16th. Near the church is an ancient tree called “the gospel oak:” the trunk, which is decayed, is 37 feet in circumference; there is also an elm, 21 feet round. Polstead Hall, the seat of Edward Buckley Cooke esq. J.P. stands in a deer park of 90 acres. Edward Buckley Cooke esq. who is lord of the manor, and Sir Joshua Thellusson Rowley bart. of Tendring Hall, are the principal landowners. The soil is chiefly mixed; subsoil, clay and gravel. The chief crops are barley, beans, wheat and oats. This village is celebrated for its cherries. The area is 3,414 acres; rateable value, £2,828; the population in 1891 was 745 in the civil and 736 in the ecclesiastical parish. By Local Government Board Order 16,646, detached parts of Polstead were transferred to Assington and Stoke-by-Nayland in 1884, and by Local Government Board order 16,469, a part of Boxford was annexed to Polstead in 1885.

A School Board of 5 members was formed 23 June, 1875; W. Ffennell & A. Newman, Hadleigh, clerks to the board & attendance officers.
