Historical Description
POSLINGFORD is a parish and village, 2 ½ miles north from Clare station, on the Cambridge and Long Melford branch of the Great Eastern railway, and 9 east-by-north from Haverhill, in the Southern division of the county, Risbridge hundred, petty sessional division and union, Haverhill county court district, rural deanery of Clare, archdeaconry of Sudbury and diocese of Ely. The church of St. Mary is a small structure of flint, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch with ancient Norman doorway and western embattled square tower with pinnacles and containing 5 bells: there is a somewhat elaborate tablet to Thomas Golding esq. and his wife, dated 1641, and various other monuments connected with the same family: on the north side there is a stained window of two lights, erected by Mrs. S. A. Severne, in memory of her husband: in the chancel is a memorial window to Thomas Weston Barker, d. 1871, and another to Mary Georgiana, wife of the Rev. Henry Jarvis MA. vicar, d. 1880: the chancel retains a piscina, locker and sedilia, and there are some remains of mural paintings: the church was entirely restored in 1882, at a cost of £1,500, and has 200 sittings. The register dates from the year 1678. The living is a discharged vicarage, net yearly value £75, with 9 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of certain landed proprietors, and held since 1876 by the Rev. Henry Jarvis MA. of Christ’s College, Cambridge, and rural dean of Clare. The Golding family in this parish were of considerable influence: Sir Thomas Golding was one of the commissioners for certifying the charity lands in Essex, and amassed considerable wealth; he was sheriff of Essex and Hertford in 1561 and 1569, and the late George Golding esq. of Poslingford, was his descendant. The old manor house belonging to the Goldings was demolished by the late Col. T. Weston, who married the heiress and descendant of the Goldings, and built in its stead the mansion called Poslingford House, now (1900) unoccupied. In this parish are the remains of a priory of Austin Canons, now called “Chipley Abbey,” and which in 1468 was annexed to the Collegiate church of St. John the Baptist at Stoke-by-Clare; the buildings, the property of the Hon. W. F. D. Smith M.P. are used for farm purposes: the Abbey land is tithe free, and the owner receives small moduses in lieu of tithes from other owners within the boundary. Charles Edward Cumberlege-Ware esq. of 86 Lancaster Gate, London W, is lord of the manor. There are several landowners, of whom the Hon. W. F. D. Smith M.P. Fredk. Tuffin esq. and Lt.-Gen. G. Digby Barker C.B. are the principal. The soil is chiefly clay; subsoil, the same. The chief crops are wheat, barley, beans and roots. The area is 2,439 acres; rateable value, £1,697; the population in 1891 was 341 in the civil, and 332 in the ecclesiastical parish. By the “Divided Parishes Act” part of Gosnell Green was transferred from Stansfield to Poslingford in 1882 for civil purposes.
School (mixed), erected by voluntary subscription, with a house for the mistress, the foundation stone of which was laid by Mrs. T. H. Elwes. The school will hold 60 children; average attendance, 54.
