Historical Description

RATTLESDEN is a parish and considerable village, on a small stream which joins the river Gipping at Combs, 4 miles south from. Elmswell station on the Bury and Ipswich section of the Great Eastern railway, and 5 west from Stowmarket, in the North Western division of the county, Thedwastre hundred, Stow union, Stowmarket petty sessional division and county court district, rural deanery of Thedwastre, archdeaconry of Sudbury and diocese of Ely. The church of St. Nicholas is a large and handsome structure of flint in the Perpendicular and Decorated styles, consisting of chancel, nave with clerestory, aisles, vestry, south porch and a western Early English tower with spire and containing 5 bells: a new clock was erected and a newel staircase built in 1887, at a cost of £150: the chancel was repaired about 1879, and re-arranged and decorated in 1893: the remaining portion of the building was thoroughly restored in 1883, at a cost of £4,000: the interior is lofty, with a fine double hammer beam oak roof handsomely carved, and including figures of angels with expanded wings: in 1896 the bells were re-hung and the interior walls of the bell-chamber repaired, at a cost of £250: the old oak benches with poppy heads have been placed in the south aisle, and the remainder of the church is now seated with chairs: the east window was filled with stained glass by the late Col. Windsor Parker M.P. of Clopton Hall, as a memorial to Elizabeth, his wife, and in 1895 a new reredos was erected as a memorial to both: a brass eagle lectern was given in 1892 by Miss Barney, in memory of the Rev. John Barney MA. rector 1861—92, and his wife: there are tablets to the Revs. Walter Clopton and Richard Moseley (former rectors), who left charities to be distributed in the parish: a hot water apparatus was fixed in 1899, at a cost of about £300: the church affords about 350 sittings. The register dates from the year 1558. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £423, including 43 acres 3r. of glebe and residence, built in 1892, in the gift of J. A. Wild esq. and held since 1892 by the Rev. Ernest John Wild MA. of St. John’s College, Cambridge. The Baptist chapel was erected in 1808 and enlarged in 1892. Clopton Hall, the residence of Duncan Parker esq. J.P. is hall a mile north-east, on an eminence surrounded by woods, plantations and preserves: the south front overlooks some well-stocked fishponds, fine park and grounds tastefully laid out.

D. Parker esq. is the principal landowner. The soil is heavy, and subsoil, clay, yielding good crops of the usual kind. The area is 3,299 acres; rateable value, £2,363; the population in 1891 was 980.

Poystreet Green is a hamlet, half a mile south. High Town Green further south, and reaching to Brettenham, is also a hamlet.

Church of England School (mixed) & dwelling house attached, built in 1872 at a cost of £1,200, & enlarged in 1897, at a cost of £400, in commemoration of Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee; it has a small endowment from money left by the Rev. Richard Moseley in 1804 for this & the adjoining parish of Drinkstone, & will hold 200 children; average attendance, 180.
