Historical Description

The village of Rendlesham, said to have been thus called from King Rendulus. Here Redwald, king of the East Angles, commonly kept his court, who, according to Bede, was the first of the English who received Christianity, and was baptized here. The palace in which Rendulus kept his court, is thought to have stood in the place where Rendlesham House now stands. In digging here some years ago there was found an ancient crown, weighing about 60 ounces, which was thought to have belonged to Redwald, or some other king of the East Angles; but it was sold and melted down.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

RENDLESHAM is a parish and village on the river Deben, 3 miles south-east from Wickham Market, 2 ½ miles from Wickham Market station, on the Ipswich and Lowestoft line of the Great Eastern railway and 4 ½ north-east from Woodbridge, in the South Eastern division of the county, Loes hundred, Plomesgate union, Woodbridge petty sessional division and county court district, rural deanery of Loes, archdeaconry of Suffolk and diocese of Norwich. The church of St. Gregory the Great is a small old building of flint with stone dressings, and consists of chancel, nave, south porch and western embattled tower containing 3 bells: there are monuments to Mary Andalusia, Baroness Rendlesham, 1814; John 2nd Baron Rendlesham, 1832; Eliza Charlotte, wife of the 4th Lord Rendlesham, 1840; Anne Blanche Thellusson, 1886; and a tablet to Caroline Anna Maria Frederica, daughter of Arthur and Caroline Thellusson, 1832: in a recess of the wall on the north side of the chancel there is a monument of considerable antiquity with recumbent figures in stone of a lady with a lion at her feet and a child at each side of her: there is also a tablet to Symon Mawe and Margery his wife, 33 years steward of the liberty of St. Etheldred, d. Nov. 5th, 1610: the chancel retains a piscina, and at the entrance of the porch is a mutilated benatura. The register dates from the year 1722. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £300, including 50 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Crown, and held since 1885 by the Rev. William West B.A. of Trinity College, Dublin. Rendlesham House, a Tudor mansion, became the property of the Spencers, in the reign of Edward VI. and continued in that family until it was vested in James, 5th Duke of Hamilton, by his marriage with Elizabeth, daughter and heiress of Edward Spencer esq. of Rendlesham, at her decease it descended to her son, the 6th Duke, who sold it to Sir George Wombwell, from whom it was purchased for £51,400 by Peter Isaac Thellusson esq. son of Isaac de Thellusson, ambassador from Geneva to the court of Louis XV.; he was born at Paris in 1735, and afterwards settled an London as a merchant, and was naturalised by Act of Parliament in 1762, and in 1806 was raised to the Irish Peerage by the title of Baron Rendlesham; Frederick William Brook, 5th and present Lord Rendlesham, sometime M.P. for East Suffolk, succeeded to the title on the death of his father, 6 April, 1852.
